TOS technobabble...

Realistically they don't need to explain any of it, though. As long as we can see that Scotty knows what he's doing, we don't actually need to have him explaining to us that he's [tech]ing the [tech] [tech].

I believe Roddenberry's analogy at the time was that a cop doesn't stop to explain to the viewers at home the intricate scientific principals behind how a bullet gets propelled down the cylinder of a gun every time he shoots the bad guy, so why would our 23rd century humans explain transporter harmonics when to them the technology is as commonplace as today's microwaves are to us? ;)

I've always thought of TOS's version of technobabble as being stuff like Scotty's "I can't mix matter and antimatter cold! I've got to have thirty minutes!" or "The engines canna take much more of this, Captain!"

Kirk (and the audience) doesn't really need to know all the ins and outs of what's going on with the tech problem of the week. It's enough to know that there IS a problem for the purposes of drama. I really with the TNG writers followed that lesson. Leave the technobabble for the folks reading the tech manuals.
