TOS characters in Discovery

How would any 1701 crew serving on Discovery never mention that experience in TOS or the movies?

It never came up? We know Kirk was on the Republic and then the Farragut (until 2257), but we have no information on what assignments he had between 2257 and about 2265. Discovery could've been one of them.

Spock's background is pretty well settled, but we know nothing about McCoy's background in Starfleet. Scotty served on 11 starships in his career: we know of three. Not to mention the hundreds of ancillary characters in Star Trek who we've not been privy to their assignments circa the 2250s.

With one-time random Klingon Houses from canon being namedropped and expanded (House of Mokai), I expect the same to happen to one-time random mentioned characters from TOS.

Did Kirk ever talk about the Farragut until it had a plot purpose?

Nope! They were kinda making this stuff up as they went along. Kirk never mentioned the Tarsus incident until "Conscience of the King"--and then never again. Ditto for his past visit to the "Private Little War" planet, or the incident with the cloud-creature in "Obsession" or his past with Ruth or Finnegan in "Shore Leave" or his past with Janice Lester or Areel Shaw or whatever. Hell, it's not like Kirk ever talked about his son, David, on TOS . . ...

Plus, in real life, do people constantly talk about their old jobs? I used to drain blood from winos in Seattle, but that was a decades ago and I can't remember the last time it came up in conversation. :)

he also never mentioned his stint on the U.S.S. Republic (nor all his medal and commendations from previous missions and assignments - which we never got a complete list on BTW ;)) until the incident in TOS - "Court Martial" either.

We know Commodore Stone was in command of a starship and highly decorated at some point before being assigned to Starbase 11. Maybe he could be seen as a captain during this era. Might even have him show up in a Constitution-class ship instead of Pike and the Enterprise.

As for Garth of Izar, I imagine he gains more fame during this war. His accident shouldn't be for a while yet as it seemed to be a recent condition to have him the a mental institution.

Matt Decker and Chris Pike are already captains of considerable note that they get displayed as top tier with the likes of President Jonathan Archer (who is likely legendary to most people in the 23rd century).

We hopefully will see Robert April one of these days. He might be a Fleet Captain or a Commodore already, as that was his rank still in 2270, before is appointed mandatory retirement at age 75 (waved due to service record). Also from that episode we know April was there when Enterprise was put together in the San Francisco Yards.

For most crew, yes. But Kirk and Spock would discuss it, if it were relevant to their mission.

They did. When they're planning to catch Valeris in ST VI, Kirk whispers something in Spock's ear:

KIRK: Can I talk to you?
(Kirk and Spock have been conferring down the corridor)
KIRK (whispering): Remember that time we both ended up on the USS Discovery in 2257 with your mutineer adopted-sister and we did that med-bay thing to trick that guy? I'll bet it would work here too.
SPOCK: It's possible.

That's from a very early version of the script. In fact, I have the only copy. True story!

Great idea just popped up in Facebook..

If the show ever decides to explore Mudd's life more then they would need to show her Stella. And who better to play her than Rainn Wilson's Office co-star (and lover) Angela Kinsey!

#AngelaForStella!

that's actually pretty dang good fan casting. I can imagine her going "Harcourt! Harcourt Fenton Mudd Where have you been!"
