Re: Star Trek: Cast No Shadow Review Thread

Did I miss something? Was there as Section 31 operative active in the story?

Re: Star Trek: Cast No Shadow Review Thread

There's a Section 31 operative in every story. You just don't know it.

Re: Star Trek: Cast No Shadow Review Thread

As I am a well-known nut for inter-book continuity, I was particulary jazzed, not only for the novel-verse connections, but for the Shatner-verse references as well.
<snip>
Although, it is far easier to incorporate The Ashes of Eden into the novel-verse than it would be for the rest of the 24th century adventures.

Quite so. As Ashes of Eden has some firm continuity connections with The Undiscovered Country that also underpinned elements of Cast No Shadow, I felt it worked to mention it.
The Ashes of Eden kinda has one foot in the mainstream Trek Lit continuity and one in the "Shatnerverse" tales...

Re: Star Trek: Cast No Shadow Review Thread

Hmm. I'm now about 2/3 of the way into the last novella of Declassified, and so I'm already a bit hazy (I caught myself getting references in The Stars Look Down mixed up with references in Cast No Shadow), but as I recall, we never did find out
where Section 31 stood on the Gorkon Conspiracy. Whether Dr. Tancreda was acting to conceal the truth or root it out. Whether Cartwright's involvement in the conspiracy was on behalf of Section 31, or a betrayal of it.

Which is probably just as well.

^
Cartwright's connection to Section 31 was established way back in TOS: Section 31: Cloak, so I would guess that he was indeed representing them to Chang and Nanclus.

Just wrote my review for Cast No Shadow. Not too much new there, kind of echoing a lot of what others said! :) Link in my sig!

Re: Star Trek: Cast No Shadow Review Thread

I just got done with this book and overall I thought it was good. The beginning of the story really hooked me in. I think there should be more novels involving intelligence work in the Star Trek Universe.

Really loved this, I voted Outstanding.

One thing I might have missed:

When Miller died and gave Vaughn the padd-like device and said the code was 'reindeer flotilla, what was that all about? Did I really miss something obvious?

In the movie "Tron", the character Kevin Flynn created tanks for his games, and used the password "Reindeer Flotilla" to access them.

Cool, thanks for explaining that part, but what I ment was:

did the padd-like device make another appereance somewhere, or was there a reference to what sort of data was on there? Did I really miss something completely obvious??

Re: Star Trek: Cast No Shadow Review Thread

I liked it a lot! Great sequel to TUC, I liked a lot of the detective work that went on, and Elias Vaughn is always a badass! :)
Plus I like seeing Sulu take the Excelsior out for a ride, even if it is only a few pages.

Oh, and I absolutely love this bit:

"Next time, Elias, write a goddamn memo!" :rommie: Especially since The Hunt For Red October is my favorite Clancy book/Movie.

Agreed, Elias Vaughn is a great character:bolian: Nice to see how he got his feet wet with SI.
