TOS aesthetics

I detest touchscreen technology. I'm always pressing the wrong things by accident. My notebook computer has a touchscreen monitor, but I always use the keyboard and mousepad buttons for everything instead. Give me true tactile feedback from actual keys/buttons/switches/knobs/whatever.

While I don't have as much problem with touchscreens in daily life, I can't imagine using one on a Starfleet ship in battle.

You know, glass-panel cockpits are common in modern planes, even in small single-engine Cessna / Piper. But the FAA and ICAO still mandate that the dashboard must include analog mechanical versions of the basic instruments (air speed / altitude / heading / turn & bank).

Touchscreens are great, but many car manufactures have added a knob back for ON/OFF & volume control.

I would think that Starfleet would have a proper blend of "old and new" displays and controls.

No, just that it was designed and built by the lowest bidder, as every other government program does. :censored:

Those exploding consoles indicate there are no Starfleet safety organizations like OSHA, ICAO, or the FAA

I disagree. I think the consoles were designed to explode so as to kill the user rather than having them suffer a slow death in space. They are mercy killing consoles.

The first person who asks how the bidder would be paid will banned not only from this site, but Planet Earth as well.
I think I'll start a topic with a poll asking:

Which is the dumbest idea in Star Trek:
1) The Federation doesn't use money.
2) Starfleet isn't a military organization.
3) Everyone in Starfleet is an officer, Ensign and above, and there are no enlisted troops.

Of course with the touchscreens they could be configured. All the stations around the bridge could show whatever interactive display anyone's specialty required. The bridge also had dedicated stations such as ops and security as well. Stations could be locked out for security. Anyway this was done in the 80s when that type of thing was very rudimentary, before the interactive displays people take for granted today. Mechanical controls still existed inside of access panels.

Apart from the beige upholstery (superficial) it still looks futuristic. The TOS buttons and switches looks like Captain Proton.

Now THERE is a remastered edition!! :D Looks amazingly good and a nice blend of modern with 60s original color motif (the red doors I particularly like). Would take a ton of time to do, for 79 episodes and a couple of pilots (with Cage/Menagerie into consideration)

Discovery looks great exactly the way it is!

The basic design grew on me, and looks like it might have fit in - in most ways. The spinning effect just makes me wonder how the occupants and items don't get turned into puree.

Personally I think this particular starship has sailed. Fortunately there's still 3 seasons of TOS, 3ish seasons of TAS, and 6 TOS movies to take us back.
