Maybe Kirk makes all of that up.
"I'm afraid we won't have time to survey the Turquoise Nebula, Mr Spock. There's a situation brewing in Sector 452, and I want us smack in the middle of it by tomorrow. Tell you what, put a two-week survey in the log, let it replace that business with the Giant Space Chicken. No need to let Command hear about that. While we're on the subject, is Epsilon Delta Six still on fire?"
No need to cause too many ulcers for the Admiralty...
