News TOMY Star Trek Diecast Ship Replicas

Yep. Same applies to the Excelsiors and Oberths. The only reason they didn't show refit Connie's prominently as well was because the Paramount suits thought their presence in background shots would "confuse" the audience. Always pissed me off hearing that load of horseshit, but it is what it is. That and ILM apparently hated using the E-nill filming miniature, as it wasn't terribly... miniature.

They mentioned in the interview that it is an possibility but not currently being discussed. They did mention they have destroyed the molds..... Those are quite expensive to reproduce.
Destroying the molds probably makes the chances "slim to none" - the market was going to be limited by having done the model once before, that demand would be more along the lines of another limited run versus remaking the molds, the latter is probably cost prohibitive compared against the eventual return.

I guess I'm not entirely surprised they destroyed the molds, the entire enterprise (sorry, lol) seemed like it was kind of a mess. The interest was only about 50% of their initial projections for the project, but they went ahead and did it anyway with what had to be much tighter margins. And then, upon release, there were way more complains than praise for the final product along with a fair number of people canceling their orders. I was honestly a bit surprised they even did the TMP model, but I guess there were way more movie-era fans, since my understanding is that model had about 4x the interest of the TOS ship. I'd be willing to bet that if the preorders were at a similar level as the TOS model they wouldn't have moved forward with the refit.

On that note, I'm actually a bit curious what level of interest we'll see for the D7. There are a number of factors working against it: the $700 price tag, alien ships generally not selling as well as Federation ones, fewer people having the TOS ship "to go with it", TOS arguably not being as popular as the movie era, etc. I think TOMY would have probably been better off to do Reliant or K'tinga class instead

@drt I agree that the launch itself was a bit chaotic when they revealed the final look with people expressing loudly on the internet (shocking, I know!) how the screw holes, stand, etc. ruined the model. I was one who was concerned reading all this thinking I had wasted my money and purchased something not as advertised. However, upon actually receiving the TOS-E I loved it! None of the concerns so hysterically loudly vividly expressed online turned out to be "that bad". Yes, if one took a close-up of the screw hole and enlarged it on a web page it looks bad. But when I look at my model from a foot or more away you just don't notice it. The stand can be adjusted so I only need one part to hold up the ship, so again another issue that turned out not to be one.

The ship overall is a beauty! It is by far the best representation I could have hoped to get for that $600. The initial uproar seemed to scare some people away thus the rush of refunds. But just looking at the secondary market a lot regret not getting the ship as they are going for thousands of $$$ now .People now see how great these ships are at this price point and don't want to miss out again. Thus the reason why the refit-E far exceeded the numbers of ordered TOS-E ships. Based on the TOS-E, and, if the quality of the refit-E is as good as I expect, I know the D7 will be as well.

I thought that destroying the molds was intentional, not a shambolic accident. Part of the original pitch was that it was a one-time offer, so you had to buy or forever regret it.
That's what the TOMY updates and postings I read told me back during the initial campaign. Again, it gets more people excited, for lack of a better word, and want to "get it while they can" a classic collector's sickness thinking... guilty as charged. :o

I thought it looked great too, and I'm glad you are loving having it!

Part of the reason why there's talk of a re-release later down the line is because that first one wasn't available outside of North America, whereas the refit was sold internationally.

I would LOVE a re-do on the TOS Enterprise with NO saucer separation and NO batteries.
