Tom Hanks plugging Star Trek again...

Tom Hanks would make a really good Trelaine.

I could also see him as the Romulan Commander in a Balance of Terror remake. Of course if he wants to don the garb of a warrior, he would make an interesting Koloth ;-)

How about as Gary Mitchell? No one said in this timeline Gary can't be older.

yeah i was also thinking trelaine..
much rather see trelaine then khan .

he would also be good as kor or the romulan commander..

Wait a sec, did I read a post on page 1 of this thread correctly, Tom Hanks was supposed to be Zephram Cochrane in FC? Wow that woulda been pretty awesome.
Rumored, but never substantiated. From Memory Alpha's entry on Cochrane:

There are rumors that Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks was considered for the role of Cochrane in First Contact, but these have not been substantiated. Given the limited budget of the film – around US$45 million – and Hank's typical US$20 million paycheck, this is somewhat unlikely, despite Hanks' avowed fandom for Star Trek.

I doubt JJ'd pay that much for Hanks either. Hanks is great but not for 20 million.

Given his enthusiasm for the franchise, I wouldn't be surprised if he'd take a role in a Trek film for a drastically reduced price.

You do hear about that sort of thing happening, now and then: a top actor taking a small role in a small or arty picture for free or for a token fee, just for the sake of working with director A or being part of bringing story B to the screen. Has Hanks ever done so before? I don't recall.

IMDB said the only reason Hanks wasn't in "Star Trek: First Contact" was because there were scheduling conflicts with "That Thing You Do!". He might have been able to do both if he was only acting in the "That Thing You Do!" (since his role was pretty small), but since he was directing it, there was no way. And Hanks has played a villain, albeit a rather sympathetic one - he was a gangster who murdered for his boss and robbed banks in "Road to Perdition".

You have to wonder if Ron Howard is calling him after all these and saying: "You do know you're promoting Angels & Demons and that Star Trek is already KILLING us in the box office, right?"

I think Ron Howard would probably call him to talk about Star Trek! AFAIK, Howard is a Trek fan as well. Also, his brother was a memorable guest star in one of the very first Star Trek episodes ever. That should count for something.

I propose that if, for some reason, JJ Abrams decides not to direct STXII, Ron Howard should do it. I'm not his biggest fan, but he's solid through and through and, as evidences by Apollo 13, not entirely averse to films about space.

Unless he plays Commodore Matt Decker. Doomsday Machine is still out there.

William Windom's shoes are impossible to fill except by someone of Hanks' stature.

Perhaps movie audiences could deal with Tom Hanks in a Trek movie if they didn't know it was him. Slap a Klingon forehead on him or something.

In The Search for Spock, Nimoy's original choice to play Kruge was Edward James Olmos, but it was decided he wasn't tall enough or something. Casting Christopher Lloyd as Kruge was a bit risky because he was known for playing comedic roles (I think he was "Reverend Jim" on Taxi at the time). It wasn't until you heard him speak English, halfway through the film, that you knew it was him. Then I remember hearing some snickering in the theater from fans where were "in the know".

I even recall a comedian doing a bit about this.

(Reverend Jim voice) "So...Admiral Kirk, you won't give me the Genesis Device? Okey-doke!"
