I just find it hypocritical for people to bash the beige carpeting of TNG on the basis of it being "old" while brushing aside awful "new" creative decisions in Discovery and Kelvin on the basis of look and feel being a "silly nitpick".
If the look doesn't matter than why should anyone care if it's retro or not?
There's nothing inconsistent in thinking TNG looks dated and wanting DSC not to look dated. TNG didn't look dated when it was made, but some definitely want Discovery to.
Again, a show I'd really enjoy. If Picard has been out of Starfleet for 10-ish years, and he isn't being "drafted" via the Reserve Activation Clause™, we might not see that many starships, let alone new ones.
Maybe Picard is flying around with Worf on the IKS Rotarran and they stop off and go fishig on whatever planet they're near.
It's not about wanting it to look retro, just good. I resist the notion that the creative decisions made to give Discovery a contemporary sheen are the best let alone only possible ones.
And I resist the notion that THE ORVILLE is the only viable aesthetic that Trek should aspire to.
I don't think anyone playing Star Trek Online, for instance, feel the original designs there are "dated".
What does that have to do with anything?
Again, a show I'd really enjoy.
Vash, Picard, and a Ferengi walk into a bar.....
As long as that Ferengi is Quark, I'm in.
But who owns the bar?
Odo is the bar.
It's gonna have to rethink it's aesthetic for the 21st centuryas great as both those sets are, the new show is going to need to rethink the aesthetic for the 25th century.
So now it's about being "old"? There were fans complaining about TNG's look when it was brand spankin new.
just like newer shows to get a little more creative than just recreating past aesthetics. TNG's look was very different from past Trek and that was perfectly fine then. I'd rather Picard's new show be something different rather than recreating 1980s sets. It's perfectly fine for THE ORVILLE because the show is ultimately a comedic homage to an older show.
I was one of those fans in '87. And the complaint is the same one 31 years later. It looks like a Cruise ship. I thought that then, and I still think so. The bridge seemed to be a case study in wasted space
