TNG Returns!

I just find it hypocritical for people to bash the beige carpeting of TNG on the basis of it being "old" while brushing aside awful "new" creative decisions in Discovery and Kelvin on the basis of look and feel being a "silly nitpick".

So now it's about being "old"? There were fans complaining about TNG's look when it was brand spankin new.

If the look doesn't matter than why should anyone care if it's retro or not?

I just like newer shows to get a little more creative than just recreating past aesthetics. TNG's look was very different from past Trek and that was perfectly fine then. I'd rather Picard's new show be something different rather than recreating 1980s sets. It's perfectly fine for THE ORVILLE because the show is ultimately a comedic homage to an older show.

There's nothing inconsistent in thinking TNG looks dated and wanting DSC not to look dated. TNG didn't look dated when it was made, but some definitely want Discovery to.

It's not about wanting it to look retro, just good. I resist the notion that the creative decisions made to give Discovery a contemporary sheen are the best let alone only possible ones. I don't think anyone playing Star Trek Online, for instance, feel the original designs there are "dated".

If Picard has been out of Starfleet for 10-ish years, and he isn't being "drafted" via the Reserve Activation Clause™, we might not see that many starships, let alone new ones.

Maybe Picard is flying around with Worf on the IKS Rotarran and they stop off and go fishig on whatever planet they're near.

Again, a show I'd really enjoy.

And I resist the notion that THE ORVILLE is the only viable aesthetic that Trek should aspire to.

What does that have to do with anything?

Think about the nature of this show. We might should be thinking less about Starfleet design but Civilian design. When it comes to the 24th century you get only small glimpses as to what typical Earth civilian design is. Only real consitent theme is their is a desire for older buildings and structure's. I think humans in the 24th century actually have taken a kind of retro aproach towards trying to combine modern tech with older looking structures. If not expect earth to kind of look like it does in the Abrams universe.

I was one of those fans in '87. And the complaint is the same one 31 years later. It looks like a Cruise ship. I thought that then, and I still think so. The bridge seemed to be a case study in wasted space. It didn't prevent my enjoyment of the show. I was more bothered by the story and writing issues during the first 2 seasons. Hopefully the Cruise ship aesthetic is gone forever. I suspect it is, as even the Ent-E showed improvement in that area, and that was already over 20 years ago.

I want anything they do to be very good. If reimaging in terms of Art direction, then at least let them be good designs. An improvement over the original if possible. At the very least it should be no worse. The Disco art direction however, sucks. The ship, makeup, prosthetic, set, uniform changes were all disappointing to say the least. No exceptions. There wasn't much in terms of changes that I thought were actual improvements, but several which were worse.

.

Remember, the original premise of the 1701-D was that it was on a 20 year mission with families. So, the idea that the work areas aren't cramped submarines seems to fit with the perspective.

Why does a ship with 10-20 times the volume of Kirk's ship, but only 3 times the crew, need to worry about space usage?
