"TNG" Remastered

You know, though, I liked the first season better than the second. At least there was some novelty to the show and the characters, and some attempts to experiment. The second year consisted of a few fairly bright spots adrift on a sea of lame while various members of the writing staff struggled with their daggers and targets.

Whoa, have to disagree! TNG Season 2 is one of my favourite seasons, light years ahead of season 1 and, IMO, even season 7 (formulaic drivel for the most part, with actors clearly impatient to start their "movie careers").

Season 2 personal favourites (and some of these make lots of people's all-time fave lists, so it's not just me being odd):

Where Silence Has Lease
Elementary Dear Data
A Matter Of Honour (a real classic)
The Measure Of A Man (ditto)
Contagion
The Royale
Time Squared
Q Who
The Emissary

There was the same feeling of freshness as in season 1, but now with the talent to back it up. They were just prepared to be a bit more daring, offbeat, try something different in their approach (e.g. check out some of the scenes in Schzoid Man or Time Squared; real creepy, unusual pacing).

Post-Season 4, I'm afraid the show found a successful formula and just stuck it in "Autopilot" for the last few years. Season 5 and 7 being the worst offenders. There's a...blandness to the way they're filmed, never mind the quality of stories.

So, Season 2-4 FTW. :)

Since I'm an old fart fan film producer from the '90s, whore for VFX, okay so I started in '98, we can call that the 90's right? I decided to get my hands wet on some Star Trek, it's been far to long. I'm working on completing a nice little re-tooling of a classic TNG ep as if it were remastered by the folks at err, Paramount, CBS? What ever the crap they're calling themselves these days...Anyways the edit will be similar to TOS: Remastered. Maybe it will be cool enough to gain some traction and the kids at CBS will realize that TNG would be awesome in HD, all they need to do is dust off a few film negatives and hire me. Just kidding, I only did this because I've got to much time on my hands these days.

Or am I really just testing the water for a new fan film production, in more ways than one? Vague? Yes, and that's good enough for me.

Keep your eyes pealed on this thread, in the next couple of days I will have this bad boy released.

The episode I decided to touch up is a personal favorite of mine, the effects were outdated and low budget, it's amazing what kids, wait I grew up, middle aged 20 year old dudes in basements can do when the wife isn't watching. Want to take a guess? It's a season two episode.

"Low budget" is really the wrong term, they had a seasonal budget and every episode had to fit in a budget pattern..if an episode was really big it had to go over "pattern"..Shades of Gray might be low budget, but that's because they went over budget on other episodes and they had to do a clip show. At the time, STNG was one ofthe most expensive shows on TV and they spent less on actors than other big budget shows, so more went into the prodcution.

As for what episode you picked, the only episode I remember with bad effects was Outrageous Okana.

or how about inserting some non-black people into the episode 'Code of Honor' to make it slightly less racist?

or how about inserting some non-black people into the episode 'Code of Honor' to make it slightly less racist?

Would Code of Honor be less racist if it was an all alien make up masks culture instead of an all black culture?

This.

As a black person who does like the episode, it always 'gets me right there' when I hear some talks about 'how absolutely racist' it is.

Especially, since I usually hear the only people complaining are white Star Trek fans; of course, there was an primarily white planet in Insurrection (a poorly written film in its own right)...but no complaints about the make-up of that world.

Code of Honor stands to this day as probably the worst Trek episode ever made. JMHO.

Not nearly. There are quite a few TOS episodes that are worse.

This.

It's funny how people say that episode is racist just because the planet's population is entirely black. I mean, why? Would the episode be racist if there were only white people? Was Amok Time racist because of the barbaric depiction of aliens with pointed ears? Would Amok Time be racist if all the Vulcans including Spock were black?

This.

"Code of Honor" isn't even the worst episode in the first season of TNG.

And it's not racist. Rather odd, rather badly done. And I'd rather never see it again. But there are far more worse episodes.

Although, I don't agree with the 'badly done'...I do agree with the rest of your post...

Hmm, I dunno. I'm hard-pressed to think of a worse First Season episode. Agreed on the rest though. ;)

'We'll Always Have Paris'....mainly because I don't find Picard that interesting..

It's up there. Any episode that beats you about the head and neck with THE HIDDEN MESSAGE get's on my shit list. Whether it be Code's hidden message on RACE RELATIONS, Angel One's message on GENDER EQUALITY or Symbiosis' message on DRUG USE.

Those episodes would be 'Darmok'....'Let This Be Your Last Battlefield' (TOS episode)...and many others...(Code of Honor is just a fun and interesting episode for me; I feel some maybe are threatened of seeing too many black people onscreen. Moreover, I wonder if this was a 3rd or 4th season episode, what excuse other than 'It's a 1st season episode, so it's automatically bad?'--among other comments--would be used?)

Still, it's interesting how we started with a poster who is going to 'update' the effects of a TNG episode, into a long discussion of what is the worst TNG episode....

Don't get me wrong, there are actually some good posts....(and I know I have my own dislikes with certain TNG episodes which I think are poor): A Matter of Perspective, The Inner Light, Darmok, I'Borg, The Game, The Outrageous Okona, Descent, Genesis) and a host of others...

Still, I'm looking forward to seeing what the OP comes up with with his update...

Only two of those struck me at the time as worthwhile - "The Measure of A Man" and "Q Who" - and having recently rewatched most of the early TNG on WGN hasn't improved my impression of the rest. "The Royale" is particularly awful. "Q Who" is notable, though, mainly for introducing the Borg - the story itself is so thin as to be negligable.

Just finished the last effects sequence last night, working now to do some tricks to the video and I should have this thing done, very soon!

Looking forward to the results, PicardAlpha...

(And sorry we all derailed your original topic)

I expect exactly ZERO to come out of this project, but on a happy note, there is actually some minor news in the STNG forum I posted about the studio efforts on STNG:Remastered.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I've been slaving a way at this for fun, nothing more...

I encourage you to not watch it, that way I don't have to hear more of your snarky remarks.

On second reading I don't think he was talking about your project.

Not a comment on quality only on the track record of most of these projects in coming to fruition.
