TNG Relaunch: What happened to Madden?

Plus Steven Culp I think even explained after he got the role of Major Hayes that he didn't get to do much with Madden. I would have had liked to have seen him as XO too but Worf was a perfect choice as well. He earned, thats all I have to say.

Wasn't that incident put on Worf's permanant Starfleet record? I recall hearing Sisko saying that this would follow him through the rest of his career and make it very difficult for Worf to continue up the command path.

Yes, that warning is on Worf's record, but so what? Picard lost two whole starships and Starfleet still entrusted him with a third. Kirk stole a starship and got it blown out from under him, and he got rewarded with command of its successor. Janeway violated the Prime Directive six ways from Sunday, not to mention violating the Temporal Prime Directive, and got promoted to Admiral. Starfleet is a pretty forgiving bunch, it seems.

But Kirk and Picard were CLEARED of any neligence during those incidents and as you say Starfleet made a mistake by promoting Janeway to Admiral. I'm not really complaining that Worf was promoted to Commander and the new XO in fact I support the change it makes much more sense than leaving him as a Tactical Officer. Not really trying to be an ass about this issue just making a point...and I still think that Madden gets a bad rap for that scene. Yes, yes, there was a reason it got taken out of the movie but still they filmed the damn thing and even though he was the butt of a joke it does lean into Riker's character to pull a joke like and I thought bookends Jean-Luc's own stern demeanor with Will during their conversation in the conference room in "Encounter at Farpoint". It shows the Captain while still stern has changed to the point where he can appreiate a good joke now, unlike fifteen or so years past.

Even captains cleared of culpable negligence are still unlikely to be given ships again in real life, so I gather.

and as you say Starfleet made a mistake by promoting Janeway to Admiral.

When did I say that? I only implied it. ;)

It's a point that's been made several times since Resistance came out, and the refutation has been the same every time: that just because Sisko said it'd hurt Worf's career doesn't make that absolute gospel. It was one person's opinion.

So? Every movie films scenes that aren't used. Deleted lines and scenes, alternate takes and coverage, ad-libs and bloopers, shots of the guy with the clapboard, you name it. Just because something gets filmed says nothing about its significance. The final film is what's created in the editing room, not what's exposed on celluloid. Does a piece of scrap marble that got chiseled off a statue deserve to be counted as part of the statue? That's all a deleted scene is. The inclusion of such scenes on DVDs has, I think, created a misleading impression of their relevance, but the bottom line is, they're scrap. They're merely raw material that was carved away to create the final product.

It shows the Captain while still stern has changed to the point where he can appreiate a good joke now, unlike fifteen or so years past.

No, because it was in no way a good joke.

I actually liked that scene and thought the stuff with Madden could have been left in (although, I'd cut it right before the seatbelt gag).

Poor Madden; perhaps some kind writer will one day redeem him and rescue the poor fella from the cutting room floor...

As said earlier, it (kind of) happened already...

one of the parallel universes in Q&A
And that was enough of an explanation for me.

...but then there's the forthcoming Myriad Universes series. Are you dropping hints!?

Yeah, but's only for like a couple pages or something though, so it's only a small cameo.

And since the authors and editor of the "A Time..." mini-series had decided to ignore the Madden character, a clever cameo in "Q&A" was all it could be. Ironically written by the author who regularly asked "Whose Madden?" whenever someone asked the question here. ;)

Madden joins the ranks of Xon: characters waiting for their alternate universe, non canonical place in the sun. In the early days of DS9, there was also intended regular character Melora Pazlar, but the scriptwriters eventually found a canonical use for her.

^She was supposed to be a regular? I would have liked to have seen that. But hey, at least we did get her as a major character in the Titan books.

I think Madden could've been used in the relaunch. If nothing else, to add to the body count in Resistance. I think the character could've had as much dramatic potential as the relaunch characters we've seen so far, it's all a matter of how you approach it.

Besides that, what happened to Wesley? Was the uniform thing ever discussed. I read that in the NEM novelization he was supposed to go on the Titan, but that didn't happen? So is Wes in Starfleet or still a Traveler?

I haven't gotten there yet, but I know that it is addressed in A Time For War, A Time For Peace, which is actually the next thing on my Trek reading pile.

If you want the more details about his history post "Journey's End" you should check out Memory Beta's Wesley Crusher entry.

It just couldn't be done without it feeling like a insult to Worf (which is exactly what that cut scene felt like in Nemesis)

That was addressed in A Time for War, a Time for Peace, as JD said, but the short answer: he's still a Traveler.

We'd actually contemplated an entire arc for Wesley based on his not being a Traveler anymore, but as soon as his dialogue was cut from Nemesis, we realized we didn't have reset a really interesting character development that made Wesley far more interesting than him becoming Just Another Starfleet Officer in order to justify a dialogue-free cameo.

So we didn't. :) He's still a Traveler.

I don't think Madden becoming an XO would necessarily be an insult to Worf. Obviously the character had already left a high profile, prestigious position as ambassador to return to being Chief of Security on the E, so maybe that was an indication, or could be that he was happier being a Security Chief than back on the command track.

Also, Madden's backstory could've been compelling enough to make him a logical choice to be the XO on the E.

With Madden they've played around with him, shaken things up more, and then perhaps killed him off, leaving the door wide open for Worf later on.

Thank you JD and KRAD.

Hopefully you'll rework that Wesley story for a later novel. I would like to see the plans y'all had in store for him.

^ I'd like to see Wesley, period. KRAD claims that having him remain a Traveler instead of joining the Titan crew is the more interesting character development... except since we never see Wesley and everything happens 'off-screen' as it were, it's actually no character development at all. At least on the Titan he would have had some screen time.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
