TNG: Light Fantastic by Jeffrey Lang coming in June 2014

I'd think that a keen observer like Moriarty would be able to notice limitations in the programming, like perhaps the number of available worlds and characters being finite, or processing delays when he does something unexpected (cf. "Future Imperfect"), or maybe the occasional rendering or processing error like those video game glitches they write about in Internet comedy articles. "I say, Countess, that horse just levitated under its own power!"

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I never was a fan of Moriarty, for whatever reason, and I kinda wish the story were going in a different direction. But I'll give Mr. Lang the benefit of the doubt! Very very excited for this one all the same!

And what a title! Love it.

Well that sounds like it could be fun, and I thought that could have been the Eye in the photo, but wasn't sure until he pointed out he was in Islington! I guess from that angle you can't see the Shard or the giant Dildo!

Damn, I was curious before, but now I am excited. Thanks Mr Lang! Good thoughts on Cold Equations, Lal and Moriarty - and more so, this:

I also decided to return Data (at least temporarily) to the world that his father, Noonien Soong, left him when he expired. Data as a casino owner: Just let that idea roll over you for a bit.

Roll on June!

Moriarty + other Trek holograms has always been the story I'd have pitched to Pocket if for some godawful reason they'd asked for a pitch from me. Awesome!

I wholeheartedly approve of this! Awesome. :)

:cool:Fantastic to read Jeffrey Lang's blog about the upcoming Data novel. This is going to be one of the books I'm definitely going to buy.:techman:

He was perhaps the ultimate human achievement: a sentient artificial life-form—self-aware, self-determining, possessing a mind and a body far surpassing that of his makers, and imbued with the potential to evolve beyond the scope of his programming.

And then Data was destroyed.

Four years later, Data’s creator, Noonien Soong, sacrificed his life and resurrected his android son, who in turn revived the positronic brain of his own artificial daughter, Lal. Having resigned his commission, the former Starfleet officer now works to make his way on an alien world, while also coming to grips with the very human notion of wanting versus having a child.

But complicating Data’s new life is an unexpected nemesis from years ago on the U.S.S. Enterprise—the holographic master criminal Professor James Moriarty. Long believed to be imprisoned in a memory solid, Moriarty has created a siphon into the "real" world as a being of light and thought. Moriarty wants the solid form that he was once told he could never have, and seeks to manipulate Data into finding another androidbody for him to permanently inhabit . . . even if it means that is Data himself.

Returning to the story begun in the novel Immortal Coil and continuing in the bestselling Cold Equations trilogy, this is the next fascinating chapter in the artificial life of one of Star Trek’s most enduring characters.

Fantastic. Absolutely nailed it, cover and description.

Can't wait for this one.

I look forward to this very much. It sounds like a fun romp through the life of Data.

I only just finished reading (and thoroughly enjoying) the Cold Equations trilogy, so I'm very eager for more about Data, and especially more about Lal. I do hope that Data returns to the Enterprise eventually--it still doesn't seem the same without him.

I can not wait for this book!:techman:

I'm even tempted to get the actual paper book instead of the ebook. I would just have to wait longer though, the book stores here are so slow!

I am personally just not sure about this. I hope it is good. I just don't know what to make of the Data story right now.

I'm amazed that that blurb says "four years later" for Dr. Soong's sacrifice. Star Trek Nemesis takes place approximately November 2379 and Cold Equations: The Persistence of Memory takes place in January 2384. It pleases me that they didn't do egregiously horrible rounding based on the year alone.

I really like the coverart and the synopsis for this book I definitely look forward to reading the further adventures of Data and Lal.
