Next episode - “Fifteen Minutes of Fame”

The Enterprise gets a bad rep in Federation press repeatedly and ultimately, an inquiry hearing is made. The source turns out to be a junior crew member that is posting updates on Startube, Fedgram and FleetToc that prove incredibly popular. Billions are drawn to read the updates with hasthags such as #Badmiral, #DevolvingCrew, #AnotherHolodeckAccident and #IsThomasRikerTheOriginal?

The climax of the episode is Picard giving a brilliant speech about how free sharing information is important and one of the foundations of the Federation, but that free information doesn't equate to sensationalist information that doesn't tell the whole story, and that nuance is essential.

(then again, this perhaps doesn't qualify as an episode that could have been written in the late 80's/early 90's, does it ? :) )

"Hypothesis"- A scientist comes aboard the Enterprise to test a new kind of hypospray. It works perfectly, and the scientist is hailed as a genius. The Enterprise intends on leaving the nebula they were in during the testing, but is then told the Cardassians have developed a powerful new weapon on a planet in the nebula. The away team gets captured investigating, and the interrogator gets ready to torture them in a transporter-proof interrogation room. However, Chief O'Brien invents a new way to use a transporter and rescues the away team. The Cardassians chase after the fleeing Enterprise as the chase leaves the nebula. They fire their powerful weapon, but it does almost nothing to the Enterprise, only injuring one crewman. They try to use the new hypospray on him, but it also fails. Our heroes realize the nebula had the power to make all hypothesises -like O'Brien's transporter technique- become true, and leave with neither the Federation nor the Union gaining new technology.

Picard game plan is completely upended when Nella Daren, on leave to visit family, is revealed to be one of the hosts of the bluegills. “Hemispheres”

The Enterprise detects two warp signatures coming from a star system, home to a pre-warp civilization, on way to pick up a runabout with Data and Geordi aboard. It's a world with two polar continents, one north and one south. Both of them were in a cold-war type technological race and both powers managed to break the warp barrier at the almost same time. The Enterprise's sensor cannot tell who did it first due to a nearby ion storm.

Both sides is demanding first contact after they picked up the D on their sensors, and threatening a world war if the other side gets the first contact. The D can't simply leave because they just picked up the debris of the runabout somewhere in the equatorial ocean.....

"The Adjournment" - Decades removed from a first contact with a very brilliant populace with a very promising future ahead of it during his days on the Stargazer, Picard - with the assistance of Data and Troi - has to investigate why in the aftermath an important legal case was thrown out, the Daystrom Institute has proceeded to engage in a reductivist campaign in regard to the planet and its people for the past couple of decades. As the Daystrom Institute’s campaign not only ignores both past and current accomplishments the planet’s populace have made in various fields of research, it outright stymies any progress the planet’s government can make in being a significant influential voice in the Federation. Meanwhile, Riker and Worf must follow up on allegations suggesting that Starfleet Intelligence has played a role in this reductivist campaign, and find out an old Academy friend of Beverly’s is one of the masterminds behind it. The crew basically hopes to compile enough information to submit to Admiral Henry in the hopes that he will end the reductivist campaign.

Starfleet orders Picard to hand them over for reasons, which he is loath to do. Meanwhile, Deanna has a secret admirer, and tries to determine who it is.

Worf struggles to accept the truth when they tell him that the "Warrior's Cry" was actually something they instilled some kind of honor code into their genome millennia ago (like what we saw in Voyager's Tattoo), but had long ago become corrupt and made Klingons more prone to violence in the event they rebelled against the Hur'Q.
