TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

There were multiple versions drawn of many shots. Not everything was changed for time reasons. Sometimes they just realized they didn't need things. A slowly materializing bridge just slows the characters down from getting on to the big reveal and could be been dumped for that reason alone.

Yes it was. Australia waited many years to get the "Special Longer Version" on VHS, and we never got it on TV. We only had the theatrical at first.
In the US, the first video release was the theatrical, but it was priced as a rental tape, so only video rental stores were supposed to buy them brand new. You could order one for home use, but so many other videos were cheaper. When the SLV came to video in the US, it replaced the theatrical completely. Lots of video rental stores sold off their worn copies of the theatrical.
When the Trek movies were coming out in widescreen (as a boxed set, with an empty box filling the space for fans to add their own copy of ST VI when it arrived separately), TMP reverted to the theatrical. In Australia, the box art of TMP in that set continued to display the running time of the SLV, but it was only the theatrical.
I rate TFF much higher than TVH. TVH is one of my least-favorite Trek films.
And I take myself pretty seriously.
First, I f'n LOVE your avatar and user name! WPIX was a staple of my childhood. Star Trek, Space:1999, The Odd Couple, The Honeymooners, Twilight Zone....late nights on 11 was so much fun!
Second: wellllll, I watch TFF a LOT and hardly every get through TVH. I don't enjoy Trek's all out comedies as much as an adventure. While TVH had a lot of weird jokes, it was, at its core, an adventure. Once TVH reaches 1986, I lose interest. I always loved TFF. It's not nearly as good as the first 3, but I saw it 7 times in the theater and couldn't understand why people hated it,

I watched the rest of (Star Trek: The Motion Picture Directors Edition 4K) and there are a lot of great things (lemme focus on the positive). I haven't watched the DE in years, so I'm used to the theatrical pacing, This version does move more quickly while not being anything close to an action film. The trims during the cloud entry and trip over V'Ger work like gangbusters and the film doesn't flag in the center anymore.
The sound mix is incredible. Dialog is crisp and really very pleasing. The music/dialog mix is well balanced and is very natural. Some of the new sound effects really work very well and open up the soundstage. I don't miss the computer's instructions during the thruster pack scene at all.
The assembly of the walkway works so incredibly well with the score. There is more emotional resonance in the film and I was actually more involved with the back half than I used to be. I think that actually becoming my favorite part of the film now.
I'll give this a look in the theater, mostly because I think this deserves to be seen where it was made for. I also don't want to judge the effects I was hard on based on my TV settings.
I must have seen TMP dozens of times and it feels like a much more solid experience with the trims.
OH! And I totally appreciate putting the theatrical version of the opening theme back. The original DE had the album cut which, I understand, was Jerry Goldsmith's preferred version. But, you know, I love ya Jer, but this is the Director's Edition, not the composer's edition.

You need that really snappy drum to wake you up after the overture and let you know it's Star Trek time.
Yes, for those who have seen the theatrical cut or perhaps even the SLV but never saw the 2001 Director's Edition, I would suggestion watching that at some point along with the special features to provide some context/comparison with this new version.

All this talk of TMP, I need to go watch the theatrical remaster as I have a long wait until September comes around. I actually love the extremely long sequences inside the cloud. For me, this film, at its peak, is almost like a mediation or psychedelic vision.
I remember seeing storyboards of the scene as depicted in the DE several decades ago so it's great that it's realized now as it was intended, not the quickie version that went out with the "rough cut" TE.
I absolutely love the newest version. It looks and sounds amazing, even streaming. I can’t wait to get the physical media to see it even better.

Hell I rate TFF higher than TWOK.
I have Paramount+. I just did a quick spot check on the 4K TMP - DE. Everything I checked looks pretty good. But I was only looking on my computer. This is something I need to see on my projector to really appreciate. I'll save that for another day.
