TLJ to blame?

Was TLJ the death knell for the franchise?

Now that we have SW movies coming out of ears, I'm not all that caring about ep 9. I'll prob go. They used to be rare, and a big deal. Now just another Big Movie. ymmv

That, in my opinion, is the issue here. These movies were event films. Now they come out every year. Someone keeps comparing this to the "amazingness" that is Marvel and wonders why the multiple releases per year works for them but not Star Wars. That kind of thing works for a pulpy, superhero universe with a broad canvas and tons of characters. (But even Marvel has its flaws and has had a few box office losers.) When it comes down to it, Star Wars is a big deal, sure, but works much better when its a small story against a galactic backdrop.

I think most people, who don't work at Disney, realize that a young Han Solo movie is a stupid idea. How old is Han supposed to be in the new movie? 25? Wasn't he only like 30 in the original Star Wars anyways?

It was never established and it was assumed he was older than Luke and in his late 20s.

And while I agree that it was a stupid idea for a film I enjoyed it quite a bit. There are certainly dumber ideas for films out there.

In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I always assumed that the character of Han Solo in SW77 was in his mid-thirties, just like Harrison Ford at the time. Solo was already a somewhat seasoned and experienced space pirate, after all.

Not only that, but you used to literally feel the blood sweat and tears that went into making the SW films. As much as the matte-lines around the tie-fighters destroyed suspension of disbelief, at the same time it was a reminder of how much manual labor it took to pull this stuff off, sometimes frame-by-frame. Each one was inventing technology and techniques as they went along, and you could feel that sense that things were just BARELY able to be pulled off. So it was meta-heroism in the filmmaking department. That's something that even Episode I did on a technical level in the march towards virtual filmmaking and cg characters. But today FX is so commonplace that it doesn't feel anywhere near as handcrafted. And what is still practical (like the handcrafted Falcon recreations) just feel like Disney merely handing out a blank check.

Yes they've not exactly pushed any boundaries technology and FX wise with these new films. I find that a little disappointing to be honest.

Maybe stupid was a bad word to use, I haven't seen it but I'm sure it's a fine blah space movie. It's just completely unnecessary to make it. Yeah yeah, I know all movies are unnecessary but you get my point.

I guess I'm odd in that I don't expect that. I know that SW was boundary pushing, including with TPM and what George really wanted to do. But, I really just want a fun movie, not something that blows me away with the technical aspects. I guess I think if I am looking for mind blowing technical things I'm not really engaged with the film.

Of course Solo wasn't necessary.

When it comes right down to it, none of these movies are necessary. Food, water and shelter are necessary. Mass entertainment is really a leisurely luxury that we could all do without.

I have to admit to being a little shocked to see that people were so uninteresed in Han's backstory.
I'm a huge fan of the character, and I actually was really interested in seeing this version of how he met Chewie and Lando, how he won the Falcon from Lando, and how he made the Kessel Run in..... crap 12(?) Parsecs.
I'm also still planning on reading Legends Han Solo, to see what the EU version of Han's origin was.

I'm not sure it is disinterest? Just wasn't something that was going to get people to rush to the theater and pay $12 a pop to see. I imagine Solo will do quite well on streaming/Blu-ray/digital download/cable.

I just don't enjoy R1 that much to put it at the top. Of the four, I find far more rewatch value in TFA, TLJ and Solo than R1. It's a well done film, but I feel very limited attachment to the characters, and feel more anger at how poorly the Death Star plan heist went. Which, I guess is the intent of the film, but that doesn't make it enjoyable.
