Tin Man make me laugh today :)

Garak007

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
A very touching episode but what made me laugh was the bit when Tin Man used its weapon to push the Enterprise and Romulan Warbird out of the way of the dying star. Why is it that Picard and Riker were the only ones really affected by the push? Were the inertial dampeners only working only at the very back of the bridge lol. If you check the personal at the science stations they are just going on with the daily routine. Ok you could see the affect of "no" inertial dampeners where Worf was as he was holding onto his console. Poor acting by Dianna mind you. Wesley could not be bothered and the lady at operations seems to be not aware what was going on at all.

Something was a bit wrong there lol. :guffaw:

This also brings up the point in the episode Cause and Effect Riker had a massive case of loss of dampeners  Ok in that episode you can understand that the ship was damaged, systems were not working but nothing seemed to be amiss in Tin Man. :wtf:

The acting in this episode is all off, mostly in the guy who plays the douchey other Betazoid. The whole atmosphere and mood of the movie is off and I'm not even sure I really cared for the music in this episode or how it was used.

But I'm supposed to be charmed, enlightened and happy at the end when the jackass Betazoid guy I've been hating for the last 45 minutes goes off to have a May-December relationship with a centuries old space butt-plug?

Ummm. Okay. I guess.

That's a rather harsh, unforgiving opinion... capped off with a crass butt-plug remark that really doesn't fit. What's your real beef, mister? Or perhaps it's the alcohol, based on your nickname... it's an episode after all, not a movie.

Exactly. Gomtu was much more suppository shaped than butt-plug shaped

I mean, how would you get it back out?

FWIW? I've never been drunk.

Secondly, I just really hate this episode.

^ OK, I can appreciate that you didn't like the episode. But you just really heaped it on, when the OP's only question was about the inertial dampener discrepancy he noticed... not a commentary/review on the episode.

Don't get me wrong. I thought that Tamron, tampon,... or whatever the hell his name was (can't be bothered with looking it up) had rather annoying tendencies. But don't you see, that was all intentional. He was a misfit who rubbed a lot of people the wrong way (and thus, us viewers). Not that he meant it. The poor guy was tortured with constantly hearing the thoughts of others around him. In a way, I felt badly for him.

Gomtu looked to me more like some kind of space pecan or almond, than anything else. But the whole idea of an organic space being that can be used as a vessel... very cool. And it was a relief to see Tam finally find his purpose... freeing Starfleet from his idiosyncrasies. ;)

Awesome GIF's!!! :guffaw: They are doing the mambo!!

My first impression of the organic ship was that it looked like a pinecone.

Then someone on this board called it a space turd and I've never been able to get that image out of my mind

I loved the episode. I thought the idea of a betazoid who couldn't block thoughts was kind of cool. Think about it. Being on a crowded bus, getting EVERY though people were having slammed into your brain by force! You'd know who thought you were cute, who thought you were ugly, who hates their job, etc etc, and this would go on non stop 24/7  I'd probably go bonkers after 2-3 days of this shit, let alone an entire lifetime.

I liked the scene at the end when Data realizes where he belongs.

I didn't like how powerful the Tin Man was. He was capable of destroying Federation and Romulan ships like paper mache toys, and he beamed Data over at a huge distance. Few races could match this level of technology I think, maybe the Voth from Voyager.

I liked the ep. Was an interesting concept, and I don't think the acting was that bad.

I didn't feel the Tam elbrun guy was a dick either.

I found this episode rather boring. It was an interesting concept, but it wasn't executed very well, IMO

I didn't love the Betazoid but I found the idea of an organic spaceship with neural interface capabilities - while not new - intriguing. The idea that the Betazoid didn't fit anywhere else so well as the ship wee reinforced by his inability to mesh with other bipeds. I really liked the episode.

Put me in the 'liked it' camp. And I didn't dislike Tam at all. I felt sorry for him.

I remember seeing this episode when it first aired. I was impressed by the episode and the guest star. I remember thinking to myself "they are finally getting TNG right." Sure enough, the rest of season 3 and season 4 were really good.

Special features on the Season 3 DVD mention that Tin Man was at least partly inspired by a peach pit. Apparently Greg Jein design the ship.

Neat. The same guy who guest starred in Tin Man played Nathan Samuels in ST: ENT (I did not like him in that role) and the Magistrate in ST: VOY Sacred Ground (I don't remember this episode well.)

And most famously known as The Mayor on Buffy, although a Star Trek connection this is not.

When I first saw the episode (as a teenager, during TNG's initial run), I thought Tam was annoying and couldn't understand why he didn't want to be best buddies with Riker, Picard, and the awesome Enterprise crew.

When I saw it again a few years ago, I thought he was a great, believable character who brought some sorely-needed conflict onto the ship. When else did anyone call Riker "bully boy?"

I thought the regulars were better than usual because of this--it gave Troi, Riker, Picard, and even Data a different kind of energy to work against. Tam made them all more interesting to watch.

^ Agreed. When someone with a strikingly different personality is brought in, the others will react to them in different ways. I enjoyed the contrast.

Speaking of what Gomtu looked like, I stumbled across something that's somewhat similar. A malanga tuber:

But it's still probably closest to an almond:

The TNG characters tended to be bland quite often so a character like Tam comes in to provide a bit more drama for the show and the characters. It gets around Roddenberry's rules that Starfleet crews shouldn't have conflict between them.
