Originally all the effects shot elements were on actual film, but they were composited on Betacam SP (I'm talking the professional Broadcast version of Betacam here that) for the majority of TNG's run, because in the end, it was all only for standard definition TV broadcast.

IE - I'm pretty sure the majority of the effects were redone/re-composited digitally for the HD release of TNG and therefore aren't the original shots from the TNG Betacam episode Masters.

TNG in the 80’s wasn’t edited on Betacam or Betacam SP for either the effects or final master. Seasons 1-3 were edited on 1-inch Type C Composite while Seasons 4-7 were edited on D2 Composite Digital (the effects were done on D1 Digital Component, but then the final edit of the SFX were transferred to D2 and edited into the D2 master). And then from the D2, 3/4-inch U-Matics were sent out to stations that received their episodes by mail. The only time that Betacam would’ve come into play was if a station dubbing it from a satellite feed and the station was using Betacam (or if the VHS duplicating plant required Betacam copies for the source). Otherwise, even the VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc, DVD’s and early digital downloads used the 1-inch and D2 composite masters.

Even DS9 and Voyager’s SD masters are D2 Composite Digital (right upto “Endgame”).
