Things you didn't like

Becoming an officer in Starfleet is more like getting a job at a corporation than our current military hierarchy.

Well, as soon as a kid from the mailroom is promoted to president of the company, I'll believe Kirk's promotion made sense.

Resume: James Tiberius Kirk

2245 - Stole a car, drove it off the only cliff in Iowa.
2251 - Drunk and Disorderly (charges dropped)
2252 - Drunk and Disorderly (PB&J)
2253-54 ...?
2255 - Woke up on the couch...
2258 -
  • Suspended for violation of Academy honor code
  • Blew up a fucking big spaceship! Woo-hoo!
  • Advanced to Captain of the Federation Flagship. FTW!

Yah ... makes no sense. There's so much missing.
I'm interested to see what's included in the DVD extras.
I got the feeling throughout the movie that a whole lot got lost on the cuttingroom floor. I understand things get streamlined for "pacing" purposes or whatever, but the Kirk "character development" is just way too shallow.

What was with the Ice Planet Hoth rip off from Star Wars? the snow beast gradually appearing out of the blizzard ala Obe Wan was almost identical frame for frame.. what was that about?

Hello all. My first post here. I'm sorry it has to be a negative one but I'm a bit disappointed. While the movie got a lot right there was a lot wrong:

1. Really, really targeted towards teenagers. And the kind of teenagers who thought Transformers was a deep and thought provoking movie. Thus the entire cast, except for Pike and Nimoy's Spock were or looked like they were about 22. As silly as TOS could get I appreciated how they attempted to depict a plausible Starfleet. This looks like 90210 in space.

2. While all seven of the main actors were great the entire supporting cast was lousy. Please hire real actors instead of Abercrombie & Fitch models so that I can feel some sympathy towards them. (Kirk's parents.) If all else fails just find some Brits!

3. Flimsy revenge plot. From what I can tell Nero wants to kill billions because Spock wanted to help but couldn't? He was not responsible for the nova, correct? That is so paper thin and ridiculous that it's just lazy.

4. The art direction throughout was horrible. As stated above engineering looks like a building's basement while the bridge looks like a cluttered Lenscrafters. Was it round? It doesn't have to be, but the point is I can't even tell. The original TOS bridge was so simple and clearly defined it was beautiful. The Narada looked lousy inside and out. Some kid's going to hurt himself with the toy.;)

5. The car scene was execrable, and even worse in the movie than the trailer forebode. The Nokia product placement was so intrusive and infuriating that we should boycott them. The Beastie Boys (I think) was so jarringly misplaced it pains me that anyone in the 23rd century will be listening to them. And the kid? Please let him go over the cliff. Why do kids in movies have to have that page-boy haircut? (Anakin.) I've never seen a kid in real life with it.

6. Kirk being ejected from the ship instead of being sent to the brig or something remotely logical. One of many contrivances to drag us from point A to point B without any real reason. Lazy.

7. Scotty is a buffoon here. No fault of the actor, just the writers. And I hate his little friend. There is no possible way that thing could have looked good on the page or the set.

8. As mentioned above the ridiculously rapid promotion and assignments to these kids. Are we to believe this is a plausible military or not? "You, what's-your-name, you're in charge - and you - instead of jail you're with me." Pike should be court-martialed.

9. Worst for last: Vulcan and Vulcans are among the greatest creations in the sci-fi genre. To destroy the planet (along with Amanda) just so that Spock can have a breakdown later is pathetic, lazy, and insulting. Especially when the reaction of everyone else to genocide seems to be "gee, bummer". If you're going to break canon this drastically then there had better be a damn good reason, execution, and consequences.

10. Abrams is another in a long line of Trek directors, writers, producers, actors who proudly and loudly declare in every interview that they had never seen the show, never liked it, still don't. And paramount continuously proudly declares they've brought in fresh and exciting blood to reinvigorate the franchise. Here's a wild thought: Hire someone who likes it! It's been on for 43 years, surely one talented member of the Directors' Guild must like it! Wouldn't that be novel?

I don't want my first post to be completely negative so, if anyone's still reading, here are some likes: The entire main cast was excellent and irreplaceable, especially Pine but particularly Quinto. The ever dependable Nimoy's return. The early scenes with Spock were the best written parts of the movie and the only seriously, maturely handled ode to Trek lore. The academy scenes and the Kobayashi Maru, though a bit goofy, were quite good. The entire parachute/drill scene was innovative and exciting. It would have made a better climax. The costumes were all great. I particularly liked how the uniforms were so faithful to the originals yet still looked modern and fresh. Here's a thought: let whoever designed the uniforms direct the next one.

Actually you'd be surprised how often in real life coincidences of that type occur and seem to be pre ordained.. and with Star Trek we are most definitely dealing with aspects of fate and destiny.. acceptable I thought considering truth is often stranger than fiction

I hated the camera work, with all the twirches and lens flares. I hate the look of the new Enterprise, inside, but ESPECIALLY outside. I hate the corvette scene. I hate the scene where Kirk runs from the monsters on the iceplanet. But I like the movie a lot.

of course it isnt if star wars was frame by reference of other movies to at certain points..
;)

but really the monster chasing kirk could have been shorter with the time going to give more background to say his recent career.

and while i dont mind the spock uhura thing the transporter thing was to over the top considering they were in front of other people.

maybe just have her see him off.. maybe even a quick hug in front of the others.
and then instead of the kiss we could have kirk apologise to spock for trying to get him to react.
and spock says he understood why kirk had to do it.
spock might even comment he has misgivings about how he bought up kirks father during the koybashi maru hearing.
