The vast majority of people here are willing to disagree agreeably. And there aren’t weird cliquey power moves with everyone trying to gatekeep what people are allowed to post about.

So on the Internet bell curve, extremely so. :)

An electrician cold called at my home last night. He wanted to follow up on an inspection or repairs from last August. I had to rearrange the job until 9:30 AM this morning. I didn't want to drop what I was doing. There was a lot of stuff to catch up on and keep track of last night. Plus, I didn't know how long the job would take.

Then... The electrician arrived ten minutes early this morning. He asked where my fuse box was. He said that he had to pick up some equipment and would be back in an hour.

Fast forward to roughly two hours later and he came back to start the job. He apologised because he'd been talking to his boss. The job took maybe fifteen, twenty minutes. It wasn't really that long.

He made an appointment for more repairs to be done. Which I found weird because he'd said that cold calling is what they do now.

A few days ago, I received a phone call to change an appointment for a door repair. Although, I was happy with the existing appointment and wasn't in a rush for a sooner one. That job went smoothly.

It was just kinda weird and annoying.

    Purposefully misleading douchebags.

We have a local business here called Johnny's Crazy Deals. Opened in 2018, as I recall (pre hurricane Michael).

I went there once after it opened to see what it was all about.

I walked in, found no employees so I wasn't greeted.

Looked around and found a lot of stuff like that looks like Big Lot's had a second hand store. There, sitting in an area playing with his phone, is whom I presume was Johnny. Didn't say anything to me, didn't get up, nothing -- it's like he cared more about the phone and music than a potential costumer.

I walked around, the play was dirty, crap all over the floor (no vacuuming), a metal bar across the floor where somebody could trip over it.

Random stuff was on the shelf, and I do mean random. And used and dirty. Why? It was fairly obvious his "Crazy deals" where items from his house/people he knows/ yard sales, not even cleaned up and just put on the shelves.

I might have bought something, but the prices even for this were a little high and between the lack of caring on his part, I walked out and never returned.

As expected, the place looked empty every time I came by (there's a grocery store connected to it I go to regularly). And soon there were percentage sales on items.

Anyway, none of this is the "purposefully misleading douchebag" stuff, but just a set up to give you more insight.

So about a month or two ago I started seeing advertisements for the business "Store closing". Ads, I think a Youtube commercial playing during videos, etc. Even on the radio. "Store closing". Now, one ad said that line but had an asterix by it, but nowhere did it explain what the asterix meant.

Well, I found out last week what I meant. Guess what? A big banner flying in front of the store said "STORE CLOSING", but in small and horizontally wider letters on the bottom, where you either might ignore it or not see it from the road, it said for store remodeling.

Yes, that's right, all these ads left out one little detail -- the store was not closing.

It was all a trick to draw people in, making them think they'll get huge discounts since it was closing.

Oh, and guess what? It appears to have opened after only a few days of shutting for remodeling, so it wasn't even a big deal, furthering the obvious trick I am saying was done.

How Johnny hasn't gone out of business yet is beyond me.

This is no one's fault and just one of those things, but it's frustrating to be on a one-lane, no-passing street behind a giant truck going slow who happens to make all the same turns you're going to make.

Disk space is okay. The computer was horribly sluggish for several days after the most recent forced update. But then I did a hard reset when everything froze the other day, and everything seems to be fine since then. Go figure.

From my personal experience with a few different computers, it seems to work fine on brand new computers that had Windows 10 installed in the first place by the manufacturer. But with computers a few years old that came with Windows 8 and then were "upgraded" to Windows 10, there's all kinds of buggy nonsense. A computer guy at Best Buy (some of them actually know their stuff) also told me that Windows 10 performs noticeably better with solid-state drives vs. traditional hard drives. YMMV.

I guess I've been lucky with mine. When I got it, it was 8, then 8.1 and now 10 (with upgrades rather than fresh installs all the way)

The only issue I had is with one program that the upgrade seemed to uninstall, but win10 did seem to fix a power related crash that I was getting with 8.

We all know, or know second hand, about the frustrations of dealing with insurance companies.

And we all know or know second hand or from news reports, about how hard they make things and drag it out in the aftermaths of hurricanes.

Here in my county, as you all remember, we got struck by a category four/category five hurricane -- hurricane Michael -- back in early October, 2018.

Insurance companies are dragging out payments or agreeing to even the damages (even when people provide photos) to the point that over a year later and there are still damaged houses all around. some have tarps, some have various damages, some places are even mostly if not all piles of rubble. One local lady with many kids had just gotten her house about two months before the hurricane; the hurricane took it down, making it unlivable. She tells us the insurance company won't pay out, claiming they don't owe as much since it's not new (two months, really, assholes???). Meanwhile, she doesn't qualify for a FEMA trailer (which they aren't doing anymore) and has had to put her kids in a place where they are getting sick from the mold and mildew, forcing hospital visits. And that's just one story.

But the utterly fucking assholery of dragging this out has reached a new level: Now the county has instituted law/ordinance where you HAVE to take care of it, and if you don't, they'll tear down ad bulldoze the properly at your expense.

So now people still suffering, still being jerked around by these insurance companies, are being FORCED into taking a hit and not getting what they are due, due to the county painting them into a corner.

All these fuckshit insurance companies dragged things out, probably knowing this would happen, and now residents are going to get screwed again.

Oh, and don't worry if you are homeless and need to stay at the local Rescue Mission. Well, unless you don't have $1,200 a month to stay there. Yeah, that's what it's costing now. they instituted a new policy you have to see a counselor twice a month and one hour sessions if $100.00 each time, so now it's $1,200 total. And you can only stay there temporarily. And you can battle the city and insurance companies while doing that.

I wish there was an evening class for basic household and car maintenance. The stuff you’re supposed to learn in shop before all schools axed it.

I had trouble starting my car this morning. Turned out it was because of huge acid buildup on my battery. The first time I ever popped the hood for this car.

Then you go to a technician with this sort of thing and get the polite judgment of your lack of car knowledge.

I need to learn this stuff but not sure how cause it’s the sort of thing society assumes you learned as a kid.

I have also learned the hard way about basic car maintenance. My mother taught me some basic repair and maintenance when I was young, which helped a lot when I was in college but there are still huge gaps in my knowledge. High school should teach basic car maintenance, or include it with Driver's Ed for every student.

I'm horrified when I meet people who know even less about cars than I do. I remember one friend who came to our front door, back when I was in my late teens (early Triassic Period). Her car wouldn't start, so my Mom and I went over to see what was wrong. She tried to start it and the engine wouldn't turn over; so Mom said "Pop the hood; it's probably the battery."

The girl didn't even know how to open the hood of her own car, so I did it for her. Mom and I got the cables and jump-started it and sent her home.

Her mother called my Mom to thank her and made some comments, like how great it was that I was so handy....because I, a mere female, knew how to open the hood of a car. [IMG]

Personally I think they should teach both shop and home ec to both boys and girls, and that sort of thing should be part of shop. :)

I've always found many gluten cookies quite tasty. I'd use a separate large cutting board.

Many folks are encouraged to go for gluten-free food by their doctors when they aren't celiac. There are other reasons. I'm among them. The pasta we eat are gluten-free. The gluten-free bread are too pricey to be bought often.
