Things that annoy you off about TOS

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

I almost wished they'd fixed the Constellation's registry number, but that's small potatoes really. Besides, there's no proof that it's even the same class as the Enterprise, as too much of it was destroyed - can't really make any kind of positive identification.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

Outer Limits had some great aliens. 'Behold, Ek!' the 2 dimensional alien explorer trapped in a 3d universe. Good stuff.
Really? Eck? It's a barely animated drawing. I just rewatched Outer Limits recently and while many of the aliens are imaginative, they're frequently not very convincing looking, even in black and white, and often the actors can't emote through the makeup.
Special effects aside, the concept was more interesting than funny robes or a forehead of the week.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

I can't say that there is anyting about TOS that pisses me off. It is a TV show of its time, so the sexism we see today is something I tune out. The FX, well, they are what they are, but I like them. If I had to pick one thing, though, it would be in some episodes, enemy ships were nothing more than blinking lights zooming across the screen. But that isn't necessarily the show's fault. Just a product of the times.

Now, TOS-R, I am a little miffed with some of the space scenes. Seems to me they could have done a better job with the CGI. When you compare the new scenes to Voyager space scenes, they look a little, I don't know, phony. Not just the Enterprise, but the planets, too. I think they would have been better off just retouching the original scenes to look as good as they could, rather than trying to recreate new, replacement scenes. Also, the opening music change is something I still can't get used to. Otherwise TOS-R's sharper colors look great.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

I did watch the series without the remastered effects and some of the original effects don't hold up well.
Some of the original effects didn't hold up that well during first run either, trust me. Blue screen spill and mattes were often visible. I wasn't familiar with blue screen processing back then, so it intrigued me enough to start reading about special effects to see how they did it.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

How in "All Our Yesterdays", Kirk, Spock, and McCoy didn't just explain that they were aliens to Mr. Atoz, Mr. Atoz was unperturbed by Spock even though it was implied that Sarpeidon didn't have space travel, and the Enterprise officers beamed down to an apparently pre-warp planet in the first place.

The planet was about to be blown to smithereens, so cultural contamination was hardly a concern ("We're aliens.' "Augh my worldview! Everything I ever believed is—" POOF! Silence.). But, yes, I hate it when the show has the characters deliberately not share basic information that would clear up matters in an instant. That works for farce or Three's Company, but really...

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

Nothing really pissed me off about the show. (Now there are many, many things about fandom that piss me off....but not so much with the show directly).

I would have liked to have seen, however:
*Uhura take the conn.
*A female Federation starship captain.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

She did. And it was interesting to see her saavy at multiple stations. I'm assuming she could probably man the science station, but that was given to Chekov later on the show...

She could also monitor engineering functions from her console. See: "That Which Survives"

She did take over navigation though.

I feel very strongly about that too, and I mentioned it elsewhere here as well.

It's kinda heartbreaking that we never saw Uhura take the conn, especially when someone like DeSalle took the conn, and I believe Chekov might've at one point too.

I guess we just have to be glad she was there, inspiring black women as a lieutenant on the bridge. But it would've been nice to see her even just sitting at the captain's chair. It didn't even need to be a "big deal" because in the 23rd century, Uhura sitting at the chair in command would be seen as just a competent officer taking over for her captain while he's away.

A little throwaway moment with Kirk rushing onto the bridge and Uhura getting up and walking over to her station with no importance given to the moment. I would've settled for that.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

I regret the seasons 2 and 3 had the action so centered on the big 3 and the bridge. In Season 1, there was oftenly short scenes where two officers or crewmen where interracting together independently from the person who sits on the Captain or leads the Landing party.

Of course, there's exception like in Obsession or The Trouble of the Tribbles, but this kind of "autonomy" is missing after Season 1.

Same here. "Pissed off" is a bit too emphatic for me.

There are some things I'd like to have seen.

Like this for example.
*Uhura take the conn.
*A female Federation starship captain.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

I agree with the sexism, and the aliens that were just humans.

I have to say there is only one episode which really makes me mad though and its 'a private little war' Violating prime directive, supplying weapons to a pre-warp society... etc.

So what exactly would you have done? Allowed the hill people to be slaughtered by the Klingon armed villagers? Sometimes there are no warm and fuzzy solutions to a problem and sometimes the rule book doesn't anticipate a particular problem.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

Couldn't they just take away the weapons the Klingons gave the natives? They weren't industrialized, so they couldn't make them on their own.

Are you going to place a starship permanently in orbit? The Klingons had been there a while and obviously weren't planning on leaving.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

The Klingons weren't just supplying weapons. They were giving the villagers knowledge about how to make the weapons themselves. That was made clear when we saw the Klingon talking to one of the villagers in person.

Just taking the weapons away wouldn't have solved anything because the villagers had already learned how to make the guns.

That said there are Earth parallels where one faction had guns before another. It's possible the hill people could have eventually come around to realizing they needed to be better armed and got around to stealing the knowledge from the villagers. But in the interim a lot of people would likely die.

As is a lot were going to die anyway. Kirk's plan was to make the planet useless to the Klingons so that they couldn't get an upper hand and would eventually get bored with the whole operation and give up. Of course the natural progression of the native culture would have been irrevocably changed by then.

This really was a case were no solution possible was going to be nice and tidy.

Re: Things that piss you off about TOS

Another side to this is what if Kirk had simply left the area without taking any action whatsoever and just submitted a report to Starfleet? What would Starfleet and the Federation likely do? Lodge a complaint the Klingons could simply ignore with laughter?

Or would the Federation have been willing to wage an open conflict over a planet of basically nobodies?

Prime Directive wasn't made to let Klingons invade or manipulate less advanced societies. Krell already did what the PD is suppose to prevent. The Prime Directive wasn't about pre-warp or post-warp societies in TOS and the weapons were absolultely pre-warp.
