Things I Noticed While Watching 20 Minutes of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek

I expect nothing less from the hack who wrote Armageddon.

Problem is, the people they are trying to attract are going to avoid this film like a plague. Abrams should've just done his own sci-fi movie instead of recreate something that already exists.

Ya know... I actually kinda liked Armageddon.

A lot of people do. That's why it was a summer blockbuster.

Which means that maybe, just maybe, Star Trek will be too!

Oh dear - Abrams wrote Armageddon? :guffaw:

I didn't know that. That's a guilty pleasure of mine. It's awful, but it's totally fun in its awfulness.

I don't know if this makes me more hopeful about Star Trek, or totally destroys any hope I might have been feeling. Because the "drama" stuff in Armageddon is so cheesy you need crackers to watch it, but I've always loved the President's speech - it is very, very Star Trek.

Now, I'm totally conflicted.

And the writers of Star Trek also wrote Transformers... but I won't hold that against them ;)

Which was a SUCCESS! Plus Star Trek isn't high art...

Sharr

And I don't want Trek to be high art (2001 was boring as hell after all) and neither do I think it is more sophisticated than other scifi-films and -shows... but that Transformers-film really was bad... I mean... just dumb... not good dumb like Armageddon... just :scream:

It's meant to be cheesy isn't it? isn't that the point? (I like it as well, it's totally over the top).

The same here... I like it for what it is...
I'll be sorely disappointed if Star Trek reminds me of Armageddon in any way. That's one movie I couldn't make myself sit through, and if Abrams is aiming for the same audience with a similar film, he's lost me for sure.

Armageddon is a Michael Bay-movie and only co-written by Abrams.

I suppose it's meant to be cheesy. Cheese has a high saleability factor. Certainly I don't think they were going for any sort of realism in that flick.

If Star Trek is that cheesy though, I'd be disappointed, though I'd probably enjoy the film while I was watching it. Like with TVH. I enjoyed it when it came out, but I consider it pretty bad Star Trek in the final analysis, and I don't really have any desire to ever see it again. One of the hallmarks of good Star Trek is its high rewatchability factor.

Abrams co-wrote the screenplay, based on a treatment co-written by two other people, based on a story by two others. Working out which parts of it J.J. was responsible for is probably an exercise in futility.

Also, they wrote M:I3, also directed by Abrams. I think that was the only good M:I movie out of the three. Tom Cruise makes me want to crawl under a couch with everything post-Days of Thunder and I actually enjoy that movie.

Yeah, but Transformers was directed by Michael Bay. Michael Bay could ruin the Bible and make even God and Jesus hate it.

Considering how bad Michael Bay is, I thought Transformers actually turned out OK. That right there should show how good Orci and Kurtzman are. :bolian:

They also wrote M:I3, which was also directed by Abrams. Out of the three, that's the only one I can watch and I actually enjoy it. That's even considering that everything else Tom Cruise has been in since Days of Thunder makes me want to crawl under a couch and die.

I'll get to the bottom...

Bottom line: I was extremely impressed with most of the footage, but I find myself a little skeptical of the use of broad comedy and sight gags. Either way, I have a feeling that mainstream audiences will probably dig it. I’m also pretty confident that the hardcore Trekkies won’t care for this movie. It is clearly a much different type of film than the franchise has ever given us before. But truth is, it might also be a much better film than they have ever gotten before. And most certainly, the most accessible Star Trek film to date. If I had to compare the footage I screened to any other film, I would say that it has shades of the better moments from Return of The Jedi mixed with new generation Battlestar Galactica.

Take for what it's worth. I still am looking foward to it. It's a film for my entertainment. Oh, and sorry if this is a repost.
Did anyone else notice a discontinuity flaw right away. The corvette had it's top up in the beginning of the chase and down a couple of seconds later, and that is not Kirk giving someone a high five on the bridge, is it ? Well, there's no such thing as bad publicity especially where Star Trek is concerned, and I do consider TOS high art in a way.

Yeah, that was mentioned a few times. It's very likely just because the trailer has some scenes cut out inbetween.

It's Kirk. But he's not giving anyone a high-five. He's just touching McCoy's shoulder.

The humor sounds better than STV by light years!

To me, these are things I'm personally more interested in and are more fun rather than "Kirk served on the Farragut and Republic and not on the Enterprise!"

And yes, good observation! And a couple of shots the sun is at a different direction. Parts look high noon, parts look like near sunset. Just small gaffes!
