Things I Noticed While Watching 20 Minutes of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek

You know, if George Lucas was directing this movie but EVERYTHING ELSE WAS THE SAME, all the spoilers, the reports, the trailer, EVERYTHING...then I bet people would be saying that the movie would suck. Yet because it's JJ Abraham who wrote an episode of Lost five years ago everyone says it's going to rule shit.

Okay please get your facts straight. JJ Abrams is not just some guy who wrote *an* episode of Lost. He created and helms it. He is the Rick Berman of Lost and Alias. (I know, I committed some sort of sin for saying Rick Berman and JJ Abrams in the same sentence)

^I don't care if it makes you feel better or not. You have decided to hate it no matter what.
I am still positive about this movie and will be there opening day. You will probably be there, too, taking notes of what you hate about it. The next day you will tell us all about it.

I think that even if some of these hardcore fans actually enjoyed themselves a bit while watching the film, they would never admit it to themselves (let alone admit it to others) that they enjoyed a Star Trek film that is popular with the masses.
I liked Star Wars, but it didn't feature Captain Kirk or Mr. Spock. If it had, I probably wouldn't have appreciated it very much.

Shouldn't I have that option without being ridiculed?

The option of not liking a "Star Wars" film with Kirk and Spock?

Sure, why not?

Of course, that's not what we're discussing in this forum.

Carry on.

If I had to compare the footage I screened to any other film, I would say that it has shades of the better moments from Return of The Jedi mixed with new generation Battlestar Galactica.
Frakkin' Ewoks!
I love Jedi AND nuBSG.
Oh, me too, don't get me wrong. I just think it's a rather bizarre way to describe a movie. "You know, it's exactly halfway between The Seventh Seal and Ferris Bueller's Day Off".

Not exactly. He co-created Lost with Lindelof but Lindelof runs the show with Carlton Cuse. Abrams has little to do with it as he's been working on the Star Trek film and Fringe. I think that's good news as it shows he is not spreading himself too thin.

I don't know what The Seventh Seal is...but if it's anything like Ferris Beuller's Day Off it'll be amazing!

Maybe Cameron and Captain Harriman really ARE the same person!!! With time travel, anything is possible.

The Jedi reference I can understand because of the epic space battles and fun action sequences like the fight on Jabba's sail barge... but nuBSG? I have no freakin clue.

Maybe the more down-to-earth characters or something.

Shit, even if his ONLY influence on Lost was that incredibly awesome pilot episode-- probably one of the best pilots I've ever seen-- that would be good enough for me.

I haven't liked JJ Abrams' work since even before Star Trek XI was announced.

But hey, consider me someone who WANTS to be surprised, proven wrong!

"So, does Kirk get killed?" and they just rolled their eyes at me and they were very condescending about my lack of Trek knowledge and treated me like an outcast... which I thought was really odd. I mean, after all, these guys were in the flippin' A/V club.

I know that look so well its like I was in the room with you.

The absolute snobbery from a group of people who are ridiculed by the rest of society is why many are embarrased to be associated with Star Trek, which then just leaves the obsessive stereotypes in the public eye. Its not just trekkies, there are similar attitudes in other groups, but I'm definitely getting that sense from the naysayers that anything for the masses, is not for them.

I can understanding loving Trek, and I can understand hating Voyager, or Enterprise, or whatever, but if you find yourself defined by it, and marginalised because of it, then its time to walk away and see what else the world can offer because frankly, Trek never is, was or will be that good. Its entertainment, not religion and the only thing we have a right to demand from this film is enough entertainment to justify the expense of seeing it, and depending on the price of your local cinema, it probably will.

I like being preachy, by the way :vulcan:

I expect nothing less from the hack who wrote Armageddon.

Problem is, the people they are trying to attract are going to avoid this film like a plague. Abrams should've just done his own sci-fi movie instead of recreate something that already exists.

Really, how do you know people are going to avoid this film like the plague? You can see into the future? Incredible.

That's happened before. Our ST club lost a lot of original members when ST IV came out. Many so-called "hardcore" fans thought ST IV was a fun movie, but not a good ST movie. A "dumbing down of ST for the masses".
