That's been a question since the very first Nero image was released, but I don't think we've ever got any real answer besides "It's all part of the plot."

I think maybe they want us to watch the movie to find out.

Thanks! Interesting comment by Kurtzman saying Nero isn't necessarily a Romulan. That seems contrary to Countdown, though.

Either this shot or the original movie poster is "reversed" (or both his ears are damaged). And I wouldn't take comments from summer 08 as definitive vs all the stuff we've seen since.

There's a picture of Nero in the newest issue of Star Trek Magazine with two very good pointed ears. The mutiliation must happen sometime during the movie. So, yes, watching the movie will help answer the ears question.

It could also be that the following recent plot rumor is the answer:

Nero is captured and enprisoned by the Klingons early in the movie, but managed to send a message into the future to himself, and another Nero comes back in time later to spring the first Nero from prison. So, there are two Neros. Perhaps the first was disfigured by his ordeal and the other one obviously isn't.

Kinda hope that's not the answer.

I love the forget everything. Its a not subtile way of telling casual viewers (who are the life blood of Trek, not us), and people who never were attracted in any way to Trek to give it a shot.

I'm taking the "forget everything" as we're starting this over how WE want it ....I really really hope I'm wrong about that. I'd rather that Trek just go the grave than it be raped & exploited for every last friggin thing that it has ...of course for the almighty dollar.

For fucks sake they should of come up w/ different characters then...I don't want them running Kirk & Spock into the ground and thru the mud. "starting over w/ different history...what??? Again hello hollywood can't u come up w/ anything new and fresh...WTF aren't they getting paid enough to come up with shit????. !@#$&^*(^@# As you can see I'm just a tad bit; ever ever so slightly negative.

That tagline is actually consistent with the story's theme itself, which is meta-textual from the fans' perspective.

Especially after JJ, Orci, and Kurtzman throw in that sneaky, underhanded plot twist at the end of the move. Kirk doesn't save Earth from Nero at all. Instead, the Narada is destroyed by the intervention of heroic Kamen Riders.....

I dunno, I don't really like this trailer as much as the other ones and the music is a little off.I don't like the tag line, I mean yeah Star Trek needs a good kick in the ass, but a total reboot is not necesary. You can still maintain the basic timeline and ignore the small continuity issues, like Kirk not bieng able to drive a stick shift, but if they Kill off Pike or Vulcan or Earth is destroyed permately(which I doubt will happen) then I don't really like that. I don't agree that as long as it's entertaining you can do whatever you want , I mean is anything sacred? The Star Wars prequel's were entertaining and made a lot of money, but it dosen't mean I like JarJar. Superman Returns was entertaining, but I don't like the kid and i'm sick of Lex Luthor.Not everything needs a reboot,yes Batman worked.The Superman movies are a prime example, most people can agree that the Richard Donner movie's are good i.e. Superman I&II, the rest weren't so good( not Christopher Reeve's fault)Superman returns wasen't so bad, but it wasen't great either, but it was good imo. It respected what Donner did and continued a good story.Now there is talk of another Superman movie, some want a complete reboot, but I disagree Brandon Routh did well in that movie and was the best pick to replace Christopher Reeve.The Hulk yes Superman can be saved with new writter's and a new director , but continuing story and same actors.Star Trek could have been saved without changing the timeline or rebooting the franchise.Let's face it, Nimoy probably has a small, but "signifigant" role in this movie, but was brought in this movie just to please the fans.Don't get me wrong, I think this movie will kick ass and it looks like the best Star Trek movie ever, but I don't see why they could just do an origin story without all the time travel and shit.I don't like the argument that as long as it's entertaining then it dosen't matter, they(Paramount) should have a little more respect than that.I just hope that JJ. get's that.We'll see

Yeah, it mainly seems to me as if Kurtzman is trying to say "I'm not going to tell you" as much as anything. It could be a nice wrinkle, though, if he had been hinting that in some way Nero both was and was not Romulan,

Looking at the still of Nero from Trekmovie, you can actually see that whatever bit Nero bit the entire side of his head, the ear just caught the corner of the bite and got taken off. Whatever bit him had a really big moulth. The ring of teeth-marks extends all the way to his eyebrow, then up around to the top of his temple.

So, who tried to eat his head?

Drawing from my own experiences, nobody outside Star Trek fandom even remembers that DS9 or VOY ever existed and those people who have actually heard about TNG and its subsequent movies make this strange retching gesture when you mention Picard or Data or Worf. In my books, that's not the proper foundation for a 'more successful' movie. It's pure and unadulterated fanboism (to avoid the harsh term 'fan-wank', which would almost be better-fitting).

I am not in the demographic at whom the ad which is the subject of this thread is aimed. So whether I like it or not is unimportant. But injecting a KEWL factor into Trek will only help it. Get the seats in the theaters, then give them the "optimism and hope" and "it's about the characters first" messages.
