Theories that were Bunk

2. That it was going to be set in the JJverse.

Heck, there are still people who think that, based on the production and makeup designs. I encountered one on Tor.com just a couple of hours ago. I pointed out that Marcus's dialogue in STID, about a Klingon war as something that seemed inevitable but hadn't happened yet, was incompatible with an all-out shooting war happening just 3 years earlier.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but I thought there was a rumor that they would use snippets of Majel Barret's recorded voice to create all the computer's speech. They didn't.

Yep, Siri won out instead ;)

I think we can now debunk the theory that Discovery is a Section 31 black-ops ship. It's pretty clear from the latest episode that Discovery is a science vessel built as a testbed for Stamets's experimental drive, and that it was co-opted for military use when the war started. Most of its crew are scientists uncomfortable with Lorca's military focus and untrained for combat. I suppose it's still conceivable that Lorca himself is associated with S31 (though I hope not), but the ship wasn't built by or for them.

They lost me at Spore Drive. I'll keep watching (who am I trying to kid), but this is not Star Trek...

Why would you do that?

There's a huge difference between "being supportive" and punishing yourself needlessly with something that disappoints you and drives you crazy.

I, for one, don't smack my genitals repeatedly with a toffee hammer when I know I'll find the sensation unpleasant. No matter how much I might enjoy my genitals and enjoy my toffee hammer traditionally...I just know better.

Plenty of people said that DS9 wasn't Star Trek, or that VGR or ENT wasn't Star Trek. Heck, there were a lot of people who initially said TNG wasn't Star Trek, including several TOS actors. After all, how can something be Star Trek if it isn't about Kirk, Spock, and McCoy? Every new Trek series expands the definition of Star Trek beyond what it was before -- otherwise why even bother to make it? Some people just don't seem to realize that.

It's not that bad. It's not torture. STD has decent potential to be a decent Sci-Fi show. As long as I don't think of it as Star Trek, it's entirely watchable. Effects are decent, plot is convoluted, but since it's a designed arc, I believe it will come together at the end. It's just ain't Trek.

I really wish I could understand this...but I just don't.

Some people feel that the latest iteration of Star Trek lacks something the others had. Maybe a sense of wonder, or optimism, I don't know. Maybe they're wrong.

Star Trek means different things to different people. To some modern fans, TNG is the standard-bearer of the franchise, and TOS itself doesn't qualify as Star Trek.

STD is most definitely a version of Star Trek. It only makes sense as part of that milieu.
There was plenty of wonder in this last episode. There was exploration of new life. There was even "shields down to thirty percent!"

And people have thought that about every prior revival of Trek. New things always meet with resistance at first. Since different people get different things out of Trek, any new incarnation is going to seem lacking to some people and worthwhile or even improved to other people. It's the ol' infinite diversity in infinite combinations. The fact that Star Trek can be different things to different people is a strength.
