The Worst TAS episode....

Technically TAS was two seasons, but since the second season was so short we'll lumpboth seasons together.

While we're discussing our choices we can also discuss whether folks think TAS can be considered as a valid extension of TOS and perhaps accpeted as Star Trek's fourth season albeit in a different form.

Of course, lets get the canon issue out of the way. TAS was viewed as non-canon for a brief time many years ago mostly due to the state of Filmation back in the day. That issue was eventually resolved and TAS regained its canon status. So this discussion has nothing to do with the series being accepted as canon.

This issue now becomes one of personal opinion: do you accept TAS as a legitimate extension of TOS?

Is TAS Canon?
I think it should be. TAS was done in a serious respectful manner with the original cast. It wasn't Star Trek meets Scooby-Doo in space or anything like that.

Christopher or Greg could retell us, since the intellectual property owners' canon is that which novel writers are not to contradict.

Though ep/movie writers can contradict anything.

See, I was listening in threads past. Just can't remember if TAS is in the CBS/Paramount canon.

Later series did make references to things originating in TAS so that was something of a back door route to legitimacy. But it has since been awhile that the canon issue was laid to rest and CBS accepts TAS just as legitimate as any of the live-action series. In their eyes it's canon.

After a lot of thought it comes down to "The Practical Joker." I just can't accept the reasing behind the story and the silliness of what happens.

That said there are other episodes that I'm not crazy about.

"More Tribbles, More Troubles" I find grating and a wholly unnecessary and ill-conceived sequel story. "Mudd's Passion" I find embarrassing in its execution. I'm not fond of "The Terratin Incident." And the idea of time running backwards in "The Counter-Clock Incident"--and its implications--beggar beleif. The idea of a universe where time runs backward might be an intriguing concept, but I don't think how it's explained and shown here makes any sense.

For years I couldn't accept the 30 ft. Spock clone in "The Infinite Vulcan" despite everything else in the episode being quite good. But then one has to recall Keniclius made oversized clones of himself as well as the fact the ancient Phylosians were oversized beings.

Agree, TAS is canon.
Yes, TAS is the continuation of TOS five year mission. In the '70s it was TOS, TAS and TMP.

The worst episode is "The Practical Joker" . Although, we do see the 1701 holodeck called Recreation room and for that I still like this episode:

I'd find it easier to name a few good ones than to pick out the worst one. Just going from my vague and distant memory of the series, "Mudd's Passion" is the one I remember as the standout embarrassment.

"The Jihad". Tchars actions and motive do not correspond for me. Also the team the Vedala choose is a bit strange. To send Kirk and Spock with that team instead only the Enterprise crew to find the Soul of Alar seems like an unnecessery complicated plan.

I guess I'll go with "The Practical Joker" due to its silliness.

While the animated format allowed for things that wouldn't have been practical on TOS, some of the concepts were rather outlandish in comparison to the live-action series.

I basically accept TAS as an extension of TOS, but as more of a fanciful interpretation and depiction of things that "really" happened (which is also how I think of TOS S3).

Back in The Day, TAS was just assumed to be "real". It was included in Bjo's Concordance, it's referenced in the novels, comic books, lots of other stuff.

Also it's pretty tough to argue against (although people do) that TAS was written by TOS writers, starring TOS actors, and even used "fourth season" scripts. How is it not "canon"?

Practical Joker wasn't bad. I fail to see the "retread" argument that Tribbles gets thrown at it. Aside from including Jones and the Tribbles it's pretty much straight out Space Opera. It's an entire episode of space battle. How can we not love this?

I think the worst by far was "The Eye of the Beholder," an overly absurd plot that never seemed to get going or be consistent.

To command respect from the Phylosians. Two off-worlders would not be taken seriously unless they had a distinct advantage.

The previous generation of Phylosians were also gigantic. Maybe their genetics figured into Keniclius' cloning technology.
