2. Grant. He appointed his war buddies, no matter how unqualified, as his cabinet. Or more likely, liquor cabinet.

3. Taft. For reasons previously stated.

I didn't list Hoover because he inherited it and just caught the wrong end of fate. I didn't add Bush because thats just playing politics. We'll need twenty years before we can look back on it with a sense of perspective. Selecting one of most immediate presidents just shows that someone isn't looking deeply enough into history.

As to the A-bombs, I don't mind using them. I do mind not dropping one in the ocean off the coast where it could be clearly seen. Give a demonstration, then advise them the next one will hit a major city. Then the next will hit Tokyo. And so on and so forth until surrender. Thats exactly what General Marshall suggested, but he was overruled. Its speculated that Truman wanted to see how it would stack up in a real-situation as opposed to plain tests. If thats the case, then his conscience had to bear that load. I don't think arguing over it will be productive. We can't change it. Only ensure we never repeat it.

I don't get the Truman bashing either, I doubt FDR would have done different. It was a strategic descision. I don't like that the bomb was dropped, but the Japaneese were killing their own people in the thousands and they would have faught for another 5-10 years in order to continue the empire. As far as Korea goes, at the time Congress didn't need to approve this was part of the Marshall plan. Every President since can be blamed for that. Domestically Truman was a forward thinker and Eisenhower was just as much a supporter of Truman as anyone else and I regard Eisenhower as one of the greats. Harding most certainly deserves as much blame for the depression as Hoover. He was just not ready for prime time.

2.) The man was a successful businessman who prospered in the private sector before he entered politics. You can't do that and be an idiot. How do you even justify such a claim?

3.) Only one member of his cabinet was from Ohio. And his so-called "Ohio Gang" consisted of the Attorney General, the Director of the Veteran's Bureau, an assistant to the Attorney General, and a personal adviser - clearly a master guild of federal power.

4.) He was what led to the Great Depression? Herbert Hoover's interventionist economic policies led to the Depression. In fact, when Hoover was Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Calvin Coolidge, they both said that all the advise he offered them was uniformly bad and refused to follow it. Saying that he caused it is like saying that Bill Clinton caused the current meltdown.
