The Worst President, your thoughts?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Downfall Never likely, huh? Now, they may have been undermanned and under supplied, but that just means they would have fought all the harder, and indeed, to the death. Remember, to the Japanese, it was dishonorable to be taken prisoner. And no, the surrender of Japan was NEVER an option among the military leaders of Japan. It took an order from the Emperor for them to finally surrender. Invasion was the only option if you wanna remove nukes from the table.

Anything about your post above sound a little strange to you like. A million lives would be lost and stick and stones would do it. Cutting off japan from its supply would have done it.

And then they would have flung themselves at the Allies in a desperate banzai charge and been annihilated.

Look i like you. I think you're a cool guy, but in this matter, you really don't know what you're talking about.

3. Taft: Mouth-piece of big business and the downfall of when Republicans were cool and did not have a 50-foot flagpole up their asses.

2. Harding: Three words, teapot dome scandal. He was an idiot and hired all of his Ohio buddies to come and work in the White House and his cabinet. He was what led to the Great Depression

1. Dick Chen- George W. Bush: pulled us back into a recession and is still making it worse everyday.

What i really wonder is why the Republicans have just a massive hate-on for Obama. Maybe what he should do is start spouting Republican rhetoric, and then the Republicans will be opposed to it because he's saying it ...

Always find it weird how people keep blaming the president long after their gone. At some point it's gotta stop, Obama's in his third year, I'd say it's been long enough.

1. Warren G. Harding. Don't know why I say that? Pick up a US history book.

2. Grant. He appointed his war buddies, no matter how unqualified, as his cabinet. Or more likely, liquor cabinet.

3. Taft. For reasons previously stated.

I didn't list Hoover because he inherited it and just caught the wrong end of fate. I didn't add Bush because thats just playing politics. We'll need twenty years before we can look back on it with a sense of perspective. Selecting one of most immediate presidents just shows that someone isn't looking deeply enough into history.

As to the A-bombs, I don't mind using them. I do mind not dropping one in the ocean off the coast where it could be clearly seen. Give a demonstration, then advise them the next one will hit a major city. Then the next will hit Tokyo. And so on and so forth until surrender. Thats exactly what General Marshall suggested, but he was overruled. Its speculated that Truman wanted to see how it would stack up in a real-situation as opposed to plain tests. If thats the case, then his conscience had to bear that load. I don't think arguing over it will be productive. We can't change it. Only ensure we never repeat it.

Why do people blame Hoover for the Great Depression when he had only been in office for a year maybe less?
It wasn't his fault, he just came into a corrupt government.

The Bush administration will always be blamed for this recession except for Republicans who can never admit their faults, or just blame the Democrats.

It might have to do with his attitude and the way he handled things DURING the Great Depression.

But you stated: George W. Bush: pulled us back into a recession and is still making it worse everyday. As if he's still in charge, he has no power anymore! The reigns are in Obama's hands now. Nothing that has happened between January 2009-Present is his responsiblity. So I'm really not sure why you worded it that way.

Oops. My bad. :alienblush: It came out different than I intended it too.

I meant to add something about the war and how it's draining our economy. I got distracted and didn't finish it.

That's my fault.

Fair enough, that's really the only reason I responded.

I believe you mean Hoover and not Harding.

I don't get the Truman bashing either, I doubt FDR would have done different. It was a strategic descision. I don't like that the bomb was dropped, but the Japaneese were killing their own people in the thousands and they would have faught for another 5-10 years in order to continue the empire. As far as Korea goes, at the time Congress didn't need to approve this was part of the Marshall plan. Every President since can be blamed for that. Domestically Truman was a forward thinker and Eisenhower was just as much a supporter of Truman as anyone else and I regard Eisenhower as one of the greats. Harding most certainly deserves as much blame for the depression as Hoover. He was just not ready for prime time.

OMG! That is so wrong that I don't even know where to begin. I'll be brief....

1.) Harding had nothing to do with the Teapot Dome Scandal and didn't even know about it. In fact, the scandal didn't even become known until after Harding's death.

2.) The man was a successful businessman who prospered in the private sector before he entered politics. You can't do that and be an idiot. How do you even justify such a claim?

3.) Only one member of his cabinet was from Ohio. And his so-called "Ohio Gang" consisted of the Attorney General, the Director of the Veteran's Bureau, an assistant to the Attorney General, and a personal adviser - clearly a master guild of federal power.

4.) He was what led to the Great Depression? :wtf: Herbert Hoover's interventionist economic policies led to the Depression. In fact, when Hoover was Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Calvin Coolidge, they both said that all the advise he offered them was uniformly bad and refused to follow it. Saying that he caused it is like saying that Bill Clinton caused the current meltdown.

Umm, Harding died while in office in 1923, more than six years before the Depression started.

Yes. I did. I had Harding on the brain and a dog yapping at my feet. Thanks for pointing that out.

Right. Thanks.

I'm stressed out with student teaching.

^ It's cool, it seems you both meant Hoover and not Harding. In that case, there's a lot of blame to be laid at Hoover's feet. He had almost nothing good to say about Roosevelt during the Depression.

False. He died threes weeks after it became public. He knew perfectly well when he died.

That was supposed to be Hoover. I was typing quick and my dog needed to go outside and Harding was the first thing on my mind.
