"The Wand Company" classic Tricorder

Well I got my email and was able to place an order. Arriving tomorrow apparently!
Update us when you have it! ...If you want to. :)

I missed what must have been a reasonably short window. I'm back on the mailing list for the next round.

It arrived safe and sound and I've had a bit of a play with it. It's great!

I don't have the phaser to compare, but build quality is very similar to the excellent communicator. i.e. the casing is quite plasticky, but it's solid and heavy with the metal frame.

The screen looks great, the moire is fab and the motor is not too noisy, and the speaker is loud and clear.

I've not tried all the different modes yet but love the prop setting, and the fact that it's an actual practical sensor device. Ok, it can't quite scan for life signs yet, but temp, humidity, altitude, sound levels and even live wires is pretty cool!

They put a lot of thought and love into this thing, and I think it's a fair price for a high-end prop replica packed with features. It's half the price of the Factory Entertainment TNG Tricorder and looks much closer to the screen-used props.

Their rollout has been painful to watch.........I have secured one but its a hot mess. Their products are amazing.......I have the whole landing party set. They whipped their fans into a frenzy then missed repeated deadlines.....had a few false starts and still most people can't order one.

The classic communicator is the only sci-fi prop I ever lusted for, if you don't count robots. Maybe the Space: 1999 commlock a little, but it looks like a much less comfortable carry than the communicator.

They have been totally screwed by the tariffs, but perhaps they would have been better waiting for stock to be distributed before turning on pre-orders.

I can't fault them wanting to get them into the hands of fans as soon as possible, and I think the communication has been very good.

It's been a bit like the COVID toilet paper panic. Everyone will be able to get one, there's no shortage, they just need to be patient. But Wand Co. probably should have predicted how fans would react to the perception of scarcity.

I hope they reissue the phaser! I've got the communicator but there's a big gap in my collection.

It wasn't supposed to be comfortable. Functional, yes. The Space 1999 comlock was really something for the 1970s. Looking back at it, taking into account UFO...just how functional would it have been?

It hasn't been a "perception of scarcity" that has bugged me personally. No, my frustration has been "cost creep" over the span of FIVE years. in 2020 Wand stated due to the larger size and possible unique features it would likely cost, oh, maybe 100 bucks more than the phaser (which ran roughly 250 dollars). Okay, fair enough.

But... (I've trimmed a lengthy "ramble") various factors have caused the expected price to "creep" ever higher until it's now in the freakin' 400 dollar range for us ugly Americans (due this latest punch of &^%$ tariffs). If I were till gainfully employed it would be one thing, but during this infernal 5 year (and likely still counting) wait, the company for whom I worked 4 months short of 30 years "retired" me when it decided to "outsource" our entire department. Currently, I'm living on my "life savings" until I can reach a point I can draw social security and medicare (if they'll still exist by that point). The Tricorder is now truly an unnecessary luxury item. :wah:

I wonder how different and more compact the Commlock might have been if the creative team had not decided to incorporate a functional television screen for certain "beauty shots"? As this was likely late 1973 or early '74 (when it was still in the pre-production phase), commercially available LCD screens (like those used in those early Casio brand pocket TVs) were still several years away. They still had to relay on Cathode Ray Tubes as the imaging element and they just couldn't be "flattened". Below a certain screen viewing surface, they wound up being longer than they were wide and tall, hence the overall shape of the device we saw in the episodes. If they had opted for a translucent sheet of backlit artwork and employed an optical insert for certain shots (the way Trek did which its desktop viewers), the CommLock might have been relatively "flat" like the Texas Instrument calculators that were hitting the market around that time. Just a personal supposition.

Chris is a good guy but he was way too optimistic in all his updates......I would have given a later date and then surprised people if I could deliver earlier........Much like Scotty. Keeping his reputation as a miracle worker.

Yes. He needed to multiply his estimate by four.
