The Walking Dead Season 6 Discussion

Wow -- another wild one for us... I thought Denise was going to bite it when I saw her today..but by being bitten. Totally shocked & saddened by her death. I knew the couple was doomed..but thought Tara would've been the one to die.

When the Saviors ambushed them, and 2 more episodes left, I thought they were setting up the Negan "moment", and Darryl would be the tragic death. Now...well, maybe not.

And Eugene... wow.

Really? I don't see it.

I still think it will be Glen who meets Lucille. Just like in the comic.
But if you read my earlier post, you know how good my instincts are with this show.
And Eugene... wow.
"You sure can bite a dick "

OK. Now I see it. There is a resemblance there

I had been spoiled on who dies & how in this episode earlier in the week. It was still a sad moment. Up until now I thought they would have given Denise her death from the comic with Tara taking the place of Holly from the comic.
So much for my ability to predict things on this show. Maybe Abraham will get her comic death now.
Yeah, the show sure does love fucking with comic readers when it comes to character deaths. Like Tyreese, Abraham's got a new lease on life now. I hadn't thought of it, but the Tara/Holly swap totally seems life it should've happened.

Yeah, Supergirl.... after being exposed to Chocolate-flavored Kryptonite. Not to put down the actress who plays(ed) Denise, but yeah.... there's only the smallest of similarities there. In a "they both have blond hair and the character they play wears glasses" beyond that, unless you've got some really wonky vision there's no way to mix the two up.

So, Denise's death was a shocker for me, didn't see it coming (even going with the repeated trope as TREK_GOD pointed out) I saw it was more development of her character and that I wasn't feeling this episode was one that was giving us a threat beyond the walkers.

Once again, we see characters' action (or inaction) coming back to haunt them. Morgan didn't kill the Wolves who ambushed him the forest and they eventually are recovered to play a role in the Alexandria attack. Morgan didn't kill the Wolves in Alexandria and they were part of the ambush on Rick in the RV. Daryl didn't kill the guy in the burned woods and he comes back for the attack here, and Denise gets killed.

I knew as soon as I saw them enter the machine shop this was Eugene planning on starting to make the bullets. I wonder how feasible in reality that would be? Spent shell casings can be recovered, gun-powder can easily be manufactured if you can find all of the components to it (which may prove hard if they're struggling to even find food. How common to find is saltpeter?) making the bullet itself would be a task but doable, but what about making the primer to go back in the casing? I'm guessing some of those could be found in gunstores, but then again... so can bullets.

He'd also need one of the devices for seating the bullet into the casing and, I'm guessing, some way to prep the casing to receive a new bullet.

Tara's in for a shock when she returns and finds out about Denise, and Alexandria is now without anyone with medical experience. Really, that reason alone should have meant Denise has to stay in Alexandria. Daryl and Rosita could have gone to the apothecary store and cleaned it out for the drugs, Denise is irreplaceable and there's no call for her to put herself at risk.

As pointed out in TTD, there was nice parallel between Denise's story and Eugene's story in this episode. Both of them wanting to prove themselves ready to defend themselves out in the world.

And.... spoiler time as I mull over some things.

Okay, it's almost a given someone is going to die in the season finale and there's some debate over who that could be given what happens in the comics and stuff heard in the Webs.

In the comics Glenn is killed by Negan as a show of strength to put Rick and the Alexandrians in line. There's been some suggestion from the actor who plays Glenn and the producers this might not be Glenn who dies in the finale. Which, I'd think some rumor would have been heard by now that supports Glenn leaving, like when Beth died the rumors of it having happened given she moved out of her Georgia home. So is it Glenn?

In the comics, Abraham dies the same way Denise dies here, surprise shot through the eye with a crossbow bolt from the same character in the comics. So.... does this mean Abraham is safe?

There's been a good deal of speculation that it's Daryl since the show has sort-of reignited his career and he's done other projects and supposedly has some more in the pipeline. It's been said he's one of the "core" characters who at this point is unkillable given the merchandise centered around him and the likely fan-upset it would cause. Reedus has also spoken of how much he enjoys working on the show and rumor has it he's bought a permanent residence in Georgia. His other projects he's worked around the filming of the show. More over, tonight on The Talking Dead Chris said Norman Reedus is slated to be a guest on the final episode of the season, which should be a huge indicator Reedus survives the season since if he was going to be killed he wouldn't be announced to be in the final episode of TDD instead it'd be a "special guest star."

So, will it indeed be Glenn? Will Rick's bad luck of the women he loves dying continue and it'll be Miconne? WIll it be Carl? A recovered Carol?

I really want Eugene and Rosita to hook up.

Kinda thought Denise was doomed the minute she passed the walls. I had a feeling...but I kinda wanted her to be victorious and when she launched into her speech, I was thinking, "Yeah, you go, Denise!" and then she dies right THEN. Didn't think it would go down like that. Damn. It actually made me jump.

And Eugene........damn. But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. Loving this season--can feel the tension just building and building. Can't wait to see more!!

Didn't look like all those drugs would fit in their packs but I guess. And I realize the meaning of the one soda but given the circumstances seems a waste to leave the rest. And maybe go back and get a couple people to stick with the truck but maybe those aren't as scarce as bullets? Then again I guess I shouldn't nitpick that stuff when the only Doctor goes out on jaunts like that.

Nitpicking aside, not a bad episode. Denise and Eugene seemed on a similar journey but I guess not everyone survives being initiated into Level 2.

Imagine actress Merritt Wever in the Supergirl skirt, saying "I...AM Supergirl!"

Yeah, Denise could gave given them a list--anyone can understand that. Its not like they were looking for the base chemicals used to make drugs. Its just prescription meds.

I really want Eugene and Rosita to hook up.

The problem with that is Spencer--he's looking at Rosita like she is his girlfriend, and is emotionally fragile. We see how that goes in WD land (at varying levels) with Shane or Pete. Then, there's Rositia's emotional state once she sees Abraham with Sasha. Will she assume Sasha was a back-stabber for some time, working to "steal her man?" With the tension of the Saviors all around, infighting could place many at risk.

As mentioned yesterday, that rinse and repeat move is too common--even with more established WD characters not long after some defining moment:

Beth puts Dawn in her place about the nature of what's happening at the hospital / who you are in the ZA.....dead.
Dale argued in favor of not giving in to "kill or be killed" nihilism regarding the fate of Randal...dead.
Tyreese argued that "no one has to die today" / tells stories about his father / "the high cost of living"...dead.
Bob tried to tell Rick that the ZA was like a nightmare / that a better world could return (similar to Rick's "new world" speech to the wounded Carl)....dead.
Hershel talks about choosing what you're dying for, and not long after the final disease chaos, tried to convince the Governor that a truce can work..dead.
Denise..you know the rest.

And Eugene........damn. But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. Loving this season--can feel the tension just building and building. Can't wait to see more!!

Eugene has grown as a character. I wonder if he will be some sort of bridge between Rosita and Abraham, since both clearly care about him.

Side note: In the previews, I notice Carl looking at a gun in an odd way--as if he was unsure. It can't be that, since he (post eye) had no trouble holding one on Jesus. Maybe its about whatever disaster is coming around the corner.

All in all a very good and heart wrenching episode. But Denise's death was telegraphed to the point that it was almost hurting to watch... The build up in the pharmacy as she opened the door... The sitting out on the sidewalk afterward (I kept thinking there would be one of those quick, random "walker out of nowhere" attacks as she got up) and then the walker in the car.. When she survived all that, I thought she was going to make it.. Made the climax very impactful... But still.. the teases leading up to that.. Should have just put her in a red uniform...

That episode was an emotional roller coaster. It's a shame that they killed off Denise. I finally got used to her. It's kinda her own fault though. She was loud as hell on that track.

Now don't get me wrong, I would totally bite a guy's junk to survive but... wow. +1 Eugene. As I said a while back, I wasn't sure of him, even after he stood with the others to clear out Alexandria. Now, he's up there with neck biting rick.

Though it's their choice, I'm not on page with them leaving Alexandria. It has to be safer there then outside, even with it being a target.

I know it seemed likely that Denise was a goner (and she did seem pretty stupidly reckless all episode long), but I was still pretty shocked by her actual death, and it was still really sad to see.

Of course with all the attention Rosita has been getting recently, I'm starting to think her number is up as well this season...

And am I the only one finding it highly unlikely that there are still stores and pharmacies and pantries around that haven't been completely raided and emptied out yet? Especially with how many other survivors we've seen roaming around, and with how many scouting trips our own people have gone on?

Yea. She didn't do herself any favors there.

Word. He really stepped up there.

Not everyone knows that "apothecary" basically means "pharmacy". It's a good excuse for this particular place to have gone unnoticed.

Otherwise, well, I assume that the reason they had to trade with the Hilltop community is that they have emptied everywhere within reach.

It really isn't. There's no good excuse for anywhere in that region to have been untouched, nevermind that there are more than enough people who know that "apothecary" is a synonym for "pharmacy." It's not that archaic seeing as how, you know, it's still in use. By businesses that deal in that sort of thing even... And since we know there's at least three well-organized groups scavanging the region, it's even less probable than if it was just Rick's group.

That said, I personally have more issue with how easy it is for them to find a working vehicle now than it was in the first season. Back when gasoline still had a shot of working, and most of the engines wouldn't have been completely gummed up.

I believe Rosita and Eugene hook-up in the comics, that's mostly what I was going off of. Right now she may be sleeping around in order to fill that "hole" in her heart but may soon after discover what she needs in the Mullet.

I also, sort of, found it odd that the apothecary wasn't raided yet, but we don't have too much of geographical layout of the area and it's been said this area was one the first places to be evacuated when the Walker Virus got out of control, so it could just be that there *aren't* enough people around to have raided these places or they more concerned themselves with food than they did drugs. The only use drugs would serve for most people right now would be to get high off of the opiate medications and that's assuming they know what to look for. The only people who'd know what drugs to need/use would be people with medical knowledge and maybe those people are hard to come by, Medication and even a quick high are the furthest from many people's minds right now, food is the most important.

Also, judging from all of the hands and such on the windows and such, it's possible the area was swamped with walkers before they all got pulled to the quarry or even into the parade, so getting to the apothecary may not have even been possible until very recently. The hand marks on the walls of the building did look very "fresh" and not like they've been there for the better part of two years.

I think it's well past the point we just accept that the cars just work, the "walker virus" somehow makes gasoline last longer. Fine. They have acknowledge the car thing a bit a couple times when they've had to jump a car or replace its battery, two years is a long time for a car battery to sit. The electrical system in a car is always slowly sipping at the battery, particularly in more modern cars with clocks and other active systems that are always operating.

The Talking Dead was good, the winner of the contest with the "average Joe" guy on the couch was a good one to have, be interesting to have more regular folks on the couch. The actor who plays Eugene is always fun to have on there, particularly when Abraham is there. And, well, I often found myself pretty distracted whenever Rosita talked.
