I think there are a number of current actors who fall into that mould; leading man looks but more interesting in character roles. Colin Farrell, Tom Hardy, Jude Law, for example. Heath Ledger may also have become one. The jury is out on Glen Powell.
Of those, though, I’d say that JG is probably the most successful in leading man roles and in films like The Guilty he showed that he can command the screen almost single handedly.

Yeah, to me Jeremy Irons perfectly fits that description. He's a great actor, but works best as a character actor rather than leading man.
Hmm, he’s not really in the mould I was thinking of, as, even leaving aside the age difference, he’s not a heart-throb like most of the guys I named there (though some women find him sexy) and most of his leading men roles are quite dark. I can’t really think offhand of him in a Redford/Beatty role of the sort that @the G-man originally mentioned in connection with Jake Gyllenhaal. YMVWD.

Well, I'm sure he was at some point lol. Point is, he's more of a character-actor rather than a leading-man type of actor, and he does take some dark roles. I just started watching the version of The Borgias that he's in. But even as he's playing the lead role, he to me doesn't exude it.

It’s been years since I saw Enemy Mine but I do recall enjoying it. I don’t know if it’s a classic but it’s certainly not bad. It’s one that could probably be improved on, though.
Of course, the original itself is more or less a remake of Hell in the Pacific, just transposing its World War II American-Japanese odd couple to outer space.

Enemy Mine is from 1985. It's a good message and maybe it's time to bring it forward again.
I suppose it also inspired the Patrick Stewart-Paul Winfield TNG episode. Though Winfield did not get pregnant this time.
And a whole lot of other Trek episodes. Most notably Dawn from Enterprise, which even had an alien which resembled Enemy Mine's.
It's official, Josh Gadd is writing Spaceballs 2, to air/stream on Amazon Prime/MGM.
It looks like they are going to remake An Officer and a Gentleman.
Hopefully they end up doing a new rendition of 'Up Where We Belong'.
