Spoilers The Strange New Worlds Starship Thread™

We just wrapped up a Disco season 2 rewatch. For all of her faults I didn't realize that the Disc-prize did not have that greebly crap all over her hull. What on earth possessed them to do that?!?
Texture and definition.

Yes, I'm aware this is a controversial comment. Yes, I'm aware that many think the smooth Enterprise looks the best. I am also very much aware of the artist's tendency to want to add a little something in their project, and I think this fits it quite well.

Because it still looks like the Enterprise.

I'm still confused. The Discoprise is a pretty smooth hulled ship. It has an aztec pattern, for sure. But it's hardly heavy on the greebles.

The Disco-prise is rather smooth. The SNW-prise has much more pronounced hull... I can't even call it plating. It's like welding seams the size of office furniture.

You can see it very clearly when Una a La'an are walking on the hull in Spock Amok. It doesn't make the ship look detailed. It makes it look dirty.

I had assumed that it was just kind of part of the Disco aesthetic, but she didn't even look like that in Disco. (And neither does Disco.) She looked much more like the model you showed.

I think it just depends on how the light hits her. In some shots, she's very smooth. In others, she looks like she has more of a texture.

As for the scene when they're walking on the hull. I'd just chalk that up as an extreme close-up.

I think it gives her a real sense of scale.

It looks like space barnacles. Or acne.

That third shot is a perfect example. And thanks for digging up the pics.

Well, it looked close up like what it looks like from not very far away.

It doesn't help that throughout the first season, they used a light filter that kinda washed out alot of the colour in the space shots.

Plus, there were actually a few scenes where I genuinely think something got screwed up in the rendering.

Luckily, from what we've seen in the season 2 trailer, they've drastically toned down that filter and the Enterprise look far more her usual gray then the ultra metallic look she seems to have in some shots.

God, if the hull were a little bit brighter she'd be perfect.

well.. there's apparently alot of smoke out in space so you can see the lights and give everything a haze..

Looks great before that smoke filter gets laid on like so much Mayo..

They do seemed to have turned that filter down a bit for season 2, thankfully.

They didn't add any greebles to the hull, they just added normal mapping to the aztecing for some reason.

If you look at the collage valkyrie013 posted, you can make out the same patterns on the hull there, just not as emphasized as it is in SNW.

True.
These were an import to Lightwave for the Eaglemoss books. Its the same model and textures, but he didn't emphisis the bump/normal maps.
I have the same problem on the 4 ft model of the D, the panels are just to pronounced, at that scale, there like a few feet tall. so walking on the hull like they did in First Contact on the E would be like a corn maze.
The panels shown when Una done her walk wouldn't translate at all to a far shot.. it would be smooth.
