Spoilers The Strange New Worlds Starship Thread™

Oh boy, not this again.

These threads remind me of a long lost bit of fanart I saw once. It was the ceiling cat meme, except it was Keenser and he was catching Scotty in the act of enjoying himself over his technical manuals.

But done in a cartoon style so cute.

There. I gave you that mental image and you have to live with it now.

There are loads of theories as to why ships are called "she", ranging from the Latin for "ship" being the feminine noun "navis"; the notion that ships were historically dedicated to goddesses (I'm seeing this as more anecdotal); the idea that a ship protects its crew inside itself; and finally, the famous quote from US Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz: “A ship is always known as 'she' because it costs so much to keep one in paint and powder.”

^ In The Hunt for Red October (the novel, not the film), Tom Clancy says that using the female pronoun for ships is an American thing. I'm guessing this is true, as Clancy was always very thorough in his research.

(he also says that the Russians refer to their ships in the male form, and the intelligence community refers to ships from any nation as "it".)

In the present day, I would agree. Historically, it's been a Western civilisation thing. There are exceptions, of course.

Why has the red stripe and logo on the secondary hull been turned from the original painted decals in to a physical feature? Is it now a hidden defensive weapon which can be deployed in emergency situations… or is it the latest development in warp technology, perhaps a way of injecting spores from the mycelium network directly in to the warp core for that little extra kick when the Enterprise needs a jump start?

Trekcore agrees as well:
There is a certain deliberateness to how the sets are dressed and utilized that fully embraces the Enterprise as both a character unto herself and as a mirror reflecting the people who inhabit her.
