The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

I understand why SG-1 didn't end after season 8 (by that point they were close to 200 episodes and Sci-Fi wanted to hit that milestone) but I really wish it had. "Reckoning" and "Threads" provided a great climactic ending and "Moebius" was a fun little coda to the whole show.

I loved seasons 9 and 10. That was actually when I first started getting into Stargate, thanks to the additions of Black and Browder (I was a big Farscape fan). I really enjoyed the Arthurian themes and the Ori were great villains. But I would have rather had five seasons of those characters and storylines in Stargate Command as originally planned, instead of just two seasons and two DVD movies.

I think "Moebius" kind of does do the TATV thing of not being strictly necessary but rather being a love letter to the fans...only "Moebius" does it a lot better. I'm still not sure "Moebius" exactly makes sense, but it is a fun ride, even if I also wish Ra had more to do...and it would have been really cool if they could have brought back the original actor, though I understand he's retired at this point.

He'd already been done with acting before the original Stargate movie, not enjoying the celebrity he got from "The Crying Game." He asked for a huge salary for Stargate as his way to tell them to piss off without actually making himself unhirable, and was shocked when they agreed. He also hated the wardrobe; legend has it that on his last day of filming, as soon as they wrapped, he took it all off on the set instantly.

It didn't really matter, since he was only seen in public in Moebius, so it made sense he had the helmet on (and a stand-in played helmeted Ra in the movie, too), but...

... it was weird in Continuum, where they brought back the same guy to play Ra, and he looks nothing like the actor from the movie. He was probably cast because he could carry a fifty-pound headdress on his shoulders. The only way you can tell it's him in the line-up of System Lords is that he's wearing the same blue muumuu from Moebius.

I do adore the more elaborate, expensive production design of the movie, and I wish they'd drawn on it more as the series went on and CGI made it more practical to recreate shape-shifting pyramid ships (or even, pyramid ships with the right number of sides...), giant main halls, and those wonderful retracting helmets on a TV budget. They finally got the Horus helmet down, it looked even better than in the movie, and it was after they'd beaten the Goa'uld, so they only got to do it once.

I just realized something.

When you finish SGA season 1, you will have watched 194 episodes of STARGATE. You've only got 160 left to go.

Keep at it! :) (thumbs up)

I'm realizing I'm getting close to the movies now and I actually got some funds to rent those movies on Itunes when I need to. According to the viewers guide I'm supposed to see Ark of Truth before Atlantis Season 4 and I think Continuum can be viewed any time. Then it's Universe and then Origins. When you think about it, this franchise is really expansive. It's a shame there isn't new Stargate on the horizon like we've seen with Star Trek, Star Wars, or the various Superhero shows.

THE ARK OF TRUTH definitely should be before season 4 of SGA, and CONTINUUM should certainly be watched after THE ARK OF TRUTH.

(You know... I didn't actually count ORIGINS. I haven't seen it.)

Chronologically, "Ark of Truth" comes immediately after SG-1 season 10, and "Continuum" comes immediately after the first episode of Atlantis season 5. Then all the switching will all be done.

Unless you want to watch the webisodes that go with season 1 of Universe. This all felt a lot more straightforward when the shows were airing.

I just looked up what they were and yeah I'll probably pass on them. 34 webisodes based on episodes prior? Maybe if I have nothing to do one day I might see them, but by the time I get to universe, I might be glad when this whole thing is close to over.

I'm another big fan of Seasons 9 and 10, I really liked the new characters, and while the new bad guys they introduced aren't quite at the same level as the Gao'uld, they're still pretty good villains. I thought they added a lot of interesting new bits of history to the universe.

I think I'm more used to Ben Browder in different roles than Claudia Black. The only Role I've seen Black in was Aeryn, so I'm excited to see her in another role. I wish the US had more access to some of the other work she has done. With Browder, I've seen him in Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and Arrow.

I agree. I think to this day the only thing I have seen Black in that wasn't Farscape or Stargate was the Van Diesel "Pitch Black" movie were she was in the first one.

Letters from Pegasus (SG: A)

Was this a clip show or a show with clips? Stargate has a reputation of doing these clip show episodes and some of them work (Citizen Joe and Disclosure) and some of them don't (Politics). I was watching this episode and I wonder what the definition of the term "Clip Show" was. Now this episode had a ton of clips from the past on it, but they were more flashes than actual scenes. When Stargate did it's clip show, they were scenes and the focus of the episode was more on the clips themselves than an actual plot. That's where I really draw the line here and why I thought episodes like Citizen Joe and Disclosure were effective. They were used either to advance the plot (Disclosure, and lets face it, the world had to get more involved in the Stargate program anyway) or Advance character (Joe finding the ancient stone that connected him with Jack, who already had the ancient gene). I guess what I'm saying is I don't really consider Letters from Pegasus a clip show.

With that said, I liked the episode, but there were things where I wish were cut so we could have a bit longer at the SGC. I mean they bring Walter and Carter in for the final 30 seconds (And I've seen the complete season 8 of SG-1 to know that nothing about these letters will be expanded upon, or at least I don't remember them mentioning it other than saying Pegasus Galaxy) when I think they should have gotten at least 5 minutes. I think everything with Kavanagh should have been deleted from this episode, mainly because we've only seen him once and I wouldn't shed a tear if he was captured by the Wraith. I also think some of the stuff with Rodney lasted a bit too long, and the beginning of the episode where they are planning to record messages could have been cut a little too. What I did like though was Teyla having a conscience (I really liked her in this episode) even though I have a hard time believing that the military would condone stealing from children or not having humanitarian Aid. In fact I didn't like Sheppard in this episode that much. I also liked some of the messages, like Zalenka (I'm really starting to like him a lot) talking about Atlantis Rising in Russian and reacting to Security Clearence, or McKay's deal with Carter (I did laugh a few times) and the very poignant stuff from Weir. If this was a clip show, it was one of the better ones.

Also, I love the Wraith technology. I'm not as technology obsessed in these shows as some other people are (And that's perfectly fine) but those dart ships are really cool and the fleet that was shown at the beginning looked so horrifying. Also, the beams they use for the Culling is a really sweet effect.

I've seen and heard her in quite a bit of stuff.
I've seen her in Pitch Black, Farscape, SG-1, The Dresden Files, NCIS, The Originals, and the Uncharted games, which I count because she did voice and mo-cap for a character who looks just like her.
I've heard her in Justice League: Doom, Rango, Rick & Morty, God of War, Dragon Age: Origin, and Mass Effect 2 & 3. Seeing that she voiced Cheetah in JL: Doom, kind of makes me want to see her do Wonder Woman's voice.

I think Kavanaugh is the guy who uses his one precious "letter back home" to basically submit a complaint about how Weir is a bad leader and should be replaced. That really pissed me off.

The Gift (SG: A)

I think to say Stargate Atlantis season 1 might go down as one of my top 3 favorite first seasons ever. This season was all about building up this new universe, and The Gift was the perfect set up for the finale. We learn so much in this episode. Teyla has some Wraith DNA inside her, allowing her sense them. We learn the history of why that is, how a scientist took some people who were culled and used them in experiments in the hopes to make feeding more efficient. We also learn that the Wraith language is a derivitive of Ancient and that the Wraith were created accidentally on the planet with the Bug life form. We also learn that the Wraith communicate via a telepathic network.

I have to say that revelation about the Wraiths being created as a cross between humans and the bugs makes me wonder if the Ancients are really all that "good". They mishandled Anubis, they can't interfere in corporeal life events, and they accidentally created the Wraiths. What good have they done, other than protect the city and maybe help Daniel ascend, even though that seemed to be all Olma's doing.

Teyla was amazing in this episode. I wasn't sure about the actress before, but after this episode I take back all the negative things I said. Luttrell was great in this episode, and going from Teyla to Wraith was eerie. That was some amazing character development too.

The ending makes me incredibly excited about the finale. The Wraith are coming, they know about Dr. Weir and they want another rich feeding source, Earth. I have a feeling the finale is going to be amazing, because this season has been incredible.

Kavanaugh though does pay off. It's nice to always have a character that is fun to hate around once in awhile. It makes sense that not everyone would be noble and nice. Of course you going have some jerky co-workers and what not no matter where you work.

I have to admit, I kept hoping that the character would end up having some sort of redemption arc, and it disappointed me a little that he's basically a troll for the duration.
