The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

^While I pretty much agree with everything you said here, there's a fair amount of subtext going on in the episode as well. I especially like Hammond calling Anise out, but there's another element you didn't touch on here, and while I can't recall whether it seemed minor at the time, it...well, you'll see. ;)

I did like Hammond calling out Anise. I don’t know what element you are referring but based on your smiley, I’m assuming it will come back. The podcast I have been listening to said that Anise was Stargate’s version of Seven but it was only for a few episodes. I was actually confused why they sent her and not Martoof.

This was basically an action thriller episode and I especially loved the plot with Thor and Carter, and Thor having to rely on Carter's stupid plan to take the most technological ship (aptly named the O'neill) of the fleet and feed it to the bugs and set the autodestruct. I loved the dialouge between Carter and Thor, which I thought was pretty fun all the way through.

Yeah, I love the scenes with Carter and Thor. It's great seeing those two together. And we get more world-building with seeing the Asgard homeworld and their ships. The scenes onboard the Russian sub have a great "horror" atmosphere too.

Small Victories
also has some great classic SG1 banter too:

O'Neill: "Where's the fanfare general?"
Carter: "We did just save the planet..."
O'Neill: "...again. It should not get old, general!"

O'Neill: "I'd be happy to debrief you all after I debrief myself with a nice hot chocolate."
Gen. Hammond: "Permission to shower granted. In fact, I insist on it."

Thor: "You've demonstrated that their weakness may be find in a less sophisticated approach. We are no longer capable of such thinking."
Daniel: "Are you actually saying you need someone dumber than you are?"
O'Neill: "You may have come to the right place."

There’s a moment that gets called back in a later episode.

If I recall correctly, and I apologize for the vagary here but I'm trying to avoid spoilers, they were trying to do something with the character of Anise which ultimately didn't pan out.

Martouf will always be one of my favorite characters from the show, though ultimately I felt he was a little underutilized.

It definitely felt like the writers were trying to sexualize Anise more, probably because Vanessa Angel, was very attractive. None of the other Tokra were dressed liked that. The other Tokra all dress very plainly. Only Anise shows up in a more tight fitting low outfit that accentuates her body. Although, it did seem like maybe they were trying to go for a relationship between Daniel and Anise. There are scenes where they seem to connect based on their common interests in archaeology.

I've been listening to a podcast to analyze the show as I go, but I'm starting to get really annoyed with that podcast, despite it being a popular Stargate recommendation. I think I'm just watch the show, which brings me back to what I should do when I get to Atlantis. I'm thinking I might just finish SG-1 before I go to Atlantis, unless there is a better way to go through the shows. I'm also thinking maybe I watch up to Season 7 of SG-1, watch Season 1 of Atlantis and then go back and see Season 8 of SG-1 and alternate seasons. I know the Seventh season finale for SG-1 sets up Atlantis but like I was doing with Buffy and Angel last year, I finished Buffy and then went back to Angel, while seeing the various crossovers.

By the way, the Podcast was called Get into Gate, and I guess people find it funny. I found it loud morning zoo radio where they just loved laughing at themselves. It was starting to get a little annoying.

Don't forget to do Stargate Universe and Stargate: Orgins and the cartoon Stargate:Infinity. Plus the bigscreen movie with Kurt Russell and James Spader. Also I know what you can do your next watch thread about after Stargate and that is Sliders.

And of course, “I don’t know, Carter may not be dumb enough.”

I've seen the movie a few times and Universe and Origins comes after SG-1 and Atlantis end. Also, Comet TV has just started showing Sliders and I have it set up to record on my Youtube TV DVR so that might be next. I would like to get into Agents of Shield though.

This episode was one of the most quotable episodes of the series so far. I loved the whole humanity is dumb thread that was happening, and then you get the classic Jack O'neill wit and it's comedy gold.

I think my favorite bit is when she hugs Thor and sort jumps back abit afraid she might have hurt him. Plus when she tried eating some of their food.

I think if that episode of Stargate SG-1 aired today, it would have fit right in with the CW shows, specifically The Flash. Basically, a member from the Tok'ra High Council named Anise comes to SGC and wants to run an experiment on the SG-1 team, having them wear arm bands that inject super powers (And a lot of adreniline) into their system. That leads to many hyjinks ensuing, especially a mission to take out a high powered Apophis ship in which the armbands ware off. Overall, it was a decent episode though it was the weakest of the 3 so far. They even state the message of the episode, absolute power corrupts absolutely, especially the scene at the restaurant.

I thought the point there was that the armbands also gave a drug like effect of removing inhibitions.

Agents of Shield is a good one as well. I am currently watching that show as well in my tv schedule. Have you considered Quantum Leap as well? PLus check out Continuum made in Canada but also aired on Sci-Fi. I checked it out a couple of years ago thinking it would be just a okay show and it turned out be really much better than I expected.

It was a combinations of cravings, superspeed and a bad attitude (And I think strength). The scene at the restuarant where they were all ordering 3 steaks each was a nice example of that.

And the post Atlantis novels as well. I know they’re not strictly canon but I doubt we will get anything else that follows it.

According to the behind the scenes material, while filming one of the scenes they had the puppet put its hand on Carter's butt and she turned and slapped the puppet.

I think SG-1 and Atlantis were fairly tightly in-sync. Like, you could watch one or the other, but I think the experience was enhanced by watching them interleaved. I was hoping to find a simple episode-by-episode checklist, but this article on Gateworld gives all the necessary instructions.

I think switching back and forth season by season would work pretty well. Other the set up for Atlantis on SG-1, I think there might one or two times where we got storylines that started on one and continue on the other, but I think you could follow them OK if you did the shows one at a time.
I would like a little more about the characters outside of work. We started to see it with Jack and I think Daniel was the MVP this season, but I would love to see more stuff with Samantha Carter, General Hammond, and Teal'c, at least from an Earth point of view. Still, this was a damn good season and I'm still really enjoying the series.
I think there's at least a couple episodes where we see Teal'c learning about life on Earth outside of the SGC. Not sure how much we see Daniel outside of work though.
Oh, and one of the things I looked forward to when I started this was finding the Star Trek connections in this franchise. I think one of the reasons I am looking forward to Atlantis is to see Connor Trinneer and Robert Picardo. Well, in this episode, Odo (Rene A) is the main guest star. He was very good as the main "white supremacist".
Colm Meany is also in one or two episodes of Atlantis.
I'm not necessiarily a book guy so I might pass on those.
If you do comics, there is also a unrelated comic series that is a different continuation of Atlantis, and the same publisher also did a continuation of Universe too.

Based on this, I think I'm going to do the seasonal alternate route. It will also help feed the excitement of getting to Atlantis and I've been finishing the seasons in about a week or maybe a little less. With nothing else to do, I can pick up more but not have to alternate all the time. Besides, I plan to see SG-1 Season 8 before Atlantis so I will only have to do this for 2 more SG-1 seasons.
