And even if it isn't Cumberbatch's hand, there's no telling if it's intended to be his character's anyway. Insert shots of hands and the like are often filmed by the second-unit crew using body-doubles.

You can easily tell these are different hands. The length of the middle finger compared to the fingers next to it in each case is very different.
Also here and here. That's true. The very first time in Trek history we got a clear, unimpeded shot of Doohan's right hand with the missing finger was in TFF in 1989 when Scotty was holding the silver bag of Starfleet rations/snacks that Uhura hands him on the Enterprise-A bridge.
There was a partial, very quick shot of his right hand when he helps guide a dizzy, disoriented Kirk out of the transporter room at the beginning of "The Enemy Within," but you have to look really close and sharp to notice the missing finger. It goes by fast.
Yeah, it's not Mitchell, IMHO. The character is far too overpowered to roll in the more realism-tuned world of Abrams, not to mention the series of circumstances that led to him becoming all stupid-powered hasn't happened. Plus, even if it did, where's the motive for revenge?
I feel like, assuming it's a TOS character, it's much more likely to be Khan. The timeline and events have been radically altered with the incursion by Nero, and who's to say that somehow Botany Bay didn't get discovered by, say, the Klingons? If they found him and put he and his people through hell and maybe killed a lot of them (his family), and then he escaped, he could well blame the people of Earth for having banished them in the first place. Is that perhaps stretching a bit? Sure, but no more so than Gary "I passed through the galactic barrier and now I'm crazy with the psi-power!" Mitchell.
That said, we have Cumberbatch in a Starfleet uniform, which seems to point more toward Garth and his walk-in closet full of crazy. As has been stated previously, he did have some kinda nutty explosive that could possibly do serious damage to the fleet if it were massed above Earth.
*grumble grumble*
Regardless, it's going to be an interesting next few months here at the TrekBBS. ;-)
Peace

We have a name (supposedly). http://www.startrek.com/article/check-out-new-star-trek-into-darkness-image
If all these rumors are true it seems to me like JJ is trying to link his second Star Trek movie to THE second Star Trek movie.
Looking to get some good Karma from Khan, JJ? I hope so because your trailer doesn't seem promising. I didn't see an inkling of a plot and alot of flashy cuts and SPFX doesn't cut it with all of us.
Yours was the first Star Trek movie I enjoyed since Roddenberry closed his eyes, so please don't let me down with this one.
Did you think you were going to get the entire plot in a one minute trailer designed to show a bunch of SFX shots quickly? If all these rumors are true it seems to me like JJ is trying to link his second Star Trek movie to THE second Star Trek movie.
