***The Star Trek Episode Clash!*** The Results!

Re: May 20 Results (Round 71)

Sorry, the results simply reflect reality. I've seen all five Trek series and VOY is bringing up the tail end in terms of quality (for a while there, ENT was just as bad but there has been a definite turnaround in the last half of S3, I guess the Beebs finally realized that they needed to institute plot arcs to keep the episodes from repeating what they've done before).

Ah yes, the old and overrated plot arc argument. Only one problem with it. TNG and Star Trek don't have plot arcs and they seem to be doing fine.

Yes, I have to agree with tomalak here. I don't think plot arcs have anything to do with quality. If anything, they make a series superficially more exciting. Superficially. DS9's arc was good, but ENT's has not had me especially riveted. And I personally think that this show has only marginally improved, much less so than VGR improved between its second and third seasons. The writing on ENT is still lousy.

As for VGR having won only 5 times so far, I have this to say. Everybody's right here. I've recently come to enjoy VGR a great deal again, which is why I'm disappointed too looking at the list of winners. But the truth is: Even when VGR has had a good episode - there are still four competitors. It had to face two excellent TOS seasons, DS9 shows like The Circle Trilogy, Duet, Necessary Evil etc, as well as several TNG classics - tough ones to beat even with a great entry. That's the name of the game: May the best one win. Remember: Even a classic like "Amok Time" didn't make the list because it lost out to another classic, "The Measure of a Man".

There's one thing I regret deeply, however, and that is that the initial enthusiasm for ENT (among other things, of course) prevented "Caretaker" from being voted best pilot. 'Cause it is.

'Best' is best

Not surprisingly, TNG'S The Best of Both Worlds won Round 72 today. 40 votes were more than enough for Trek's most famous cliffhanger episode to surpass its competitors. On the ranks:

3. The Council (13)
4. The Raven (2)
5. The Lights of Zetar (1)

By the way: Thank you for the high participation. 70 votes is a new record!

One way around that might be to have say 100 points available per round, and each series gets points equivalent to their perecntage of the votes in that round. It's more complex, but it means that if a series consistently comes second, it has a chance to build up points.

It would be interesting to see what difference that would make when compared to the current rankings.

Re: May 20 Results (Round 71)

^^^Yes, that's a good idea. It would get me around all this stupid calculating of percentages, too. :D Because I've always wondered: How would the results change

Maybe we can try that one day, starting from the top. You know, in the early days, we had very little participation and a Clash would be decided by a total of 20 voters or so. Now that we're up to 70 each round, it might make results more accurate if we redid them. That is, if people are interested... Let's try it during our hiatus starting next week, just to see how that would look...

June 10 Results (Round 74)

A Good 'Year' for VGR

It wasn't the easiest victory ever, but "Year of Hell" nevertheless emerged on top in the last Episode Clash until the fall. Support by 34 voters locked the win. Runner-up honors went to ENT's "Zero Hour" (24 votes). On the ranks:

3. Family (13)
3. Hippocratic Oath (13)
5. The Way To Eden (1)

A big thank you note: There were 85 votes overall this week, meaning that again, the Clash has set a new participation record. Cool. When we come back in the fall, I hope we really get that big 100! :)

Alright then, Clashers, new battles in the fall! Until then, I have thought of something new to entertain us...

Re: May 20 Results (Round 71)

Before we adjourn for the summer, I'd just like to take a minute to thank you Eddie for diligently running this for the last couple of years. It's been a lot of fun (for me anyway) and I'm sure a lot of us here appreciate to hard work and effort you've put into it.

And I'd also like to thank everyone who participated. It was really great to have a thread comparing the episodes week by week that didn't degenerate into some "my series is better than your series" event. Well done to all of you as well.

Have a great summer everyone, see you back here when The Clash begins again in the fall.

Re: May 20 Results (Round 71)

^^^Thanks, Mallory. Much appreciated. As I said before, I have to thank everybody for the increased participation. I don't know if it's because the pair-ups in the Clashes have become more interesting or because we now have the poll function, but participation has increased by more than 200% on average this season. This shows me that I'm not doing this for nothing and that's great. So thank you!

As always, I encourage all Clash voters to use the results page to discuss some of the choices that were made. Maybe I'll start something later.

Re: May 20 Results (Round 71)

Great job: Thanks for another season of the Episode Clash. Looking forward to next season's Clash. In the meantime, it'll be interesting to see if some of the results change in the rematches.

Re: May 20 Results (Round 71)

Yes, Eddie Roth certainly deserves thanks for his time and effort in compiling The Clash. I always look forward to my weekly dose of The Clash. :D

Re: May 20 Results (Round 71)

I'd like to echo the comments of the others - I've been here since the first clash and they've provided superb entertainment.

(Though I'm disappointed that Family wasn't closer, if not the winner, this time around)

Results Rematch #1

Old pilots, new winner

This is interesting. The rematch idea was to see if our newly increased voter base would've changed the outcome of earlier clashes had they all been there in the beginning. And apparently, that is the case. While the original winner Broken Bow still fared well - getting even more votes in total than the first time, as far as I recall - but the new winner is Emissary with 23 out of 60 votes. Not a totally clear-cut victory, but it shows that more votes mean more accurate results. Thanks.

1. Emissary (23)
2. Broken Bow (13)
3. Where No Man Has Gone Before (11)
3. Caretaker (11)
5. Encounter At Farpoint (2)

There was another poll question this week: Should TAS replace TOS after it's run its course? The answer was clear: 75% of you voted against it, mostly on the grounds that few people had even seen TAS, let alone liked it so much that it could win a round. I kinda agree - it might just be an exercise in futility. So therefore you have decided: TAS is not going to be a part of the Clash.

Just to show that we don't want to rewrite history, rematch winners get a (R) behind them on the list.

Re: Results Rematch #1

If we do have the re-match results incorporated, is it possible to have the episode they replaced listed on the same line as well? I'd hate to see history erased, as it were.

I strongly agree. I felt that Enterprise fought hard for it's best pilot title. It really doesn't deserve to be dethroned. :(

I added a list of "Original Winners" to the results page, so everybody can see which show won the first time. History will not be erased. :)

I'm also working on a new ranking system for the championship that will take into account every result, so that e.g. good second places in a round will also be reflected in the current standings.

Original Winners
Round 000 (Ep. #PIL): ENT Broken Bow
Round 004 (Ep. #006): TNG Where No One Has Gone Before

And here's something new: A new ranking system for the championship that includes not just won rounds, but every rank any episode made. I added the percentages of votes that the episodes made in their rounds. This is the first number. The second is the average of vote percentages a show got.

This is, IMO, a more accurate way of gauging a series' performance, because, as you see, e.g. ENT has accumulated few wins, but has often fared relatively well, regularly receiving support in the 20-30% range in recent rounds. So even if an episode didn't win, the support it got should be reflected here. This is going to be the one and only championship ranking once TOS has ended and the rematches are done.

This statistic covers all rounds were the required data was available and that will not be redone, i.e. the Rematches and Rounds 59+

Show performance

TOS 306 (13.30% average)
TNG 478 (20.78% average)
DS9 700 (30.43% average)
VGR 244 (10.60% average)
ENT 486 (21.13% average)

Re: Results Rematch #3

I like the new scoring system, Eddie Roth.

Its interesting to see that ENT is second, where as with the old system it was fourth.

Re: Results Rematch #3

Probably have to do with the fact that Ent have a lot of second places.
