The Sobering Effect of the Star Trek XI Trailer

I just want to clarify that my use of a New Coke analogy was not meant to equate Trek with a sugary pop drink. I just wanted to say that sometimes companies do try new and different things with well known and traditional icons.

I understood your point - I just coopted your metaphor to make mine. So, thanks for the nice set up. ;)

It just gets so much more dangerous with literary or cinematic properties since we all have such an emotional attachment to them. And I agree, quality is what is remembered not failure. That is why I am so open to the new film, if it works it will be a great boost to Trek. If it fails, everyone will laugh at Abrams for trying to monkey with greatness and people will look at back at TOS as the way it should always be. But I do praise Abrams for trying to bring new life into Trek.

Absolutely, and more power to them. I don't know that Abrams should get too much credit though. He's essentially a hired gun - not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm all for them giving it a shot, and I completely understand why they are, and why they're going about it this way.

oh yeah, what does a heated debate about decaying orbits have to do with the OP's point?

It's a Star Trek board. Random heated debates about episode minutiae are half the fun!

I get you, Sam. ITA.

these aren't our friends, but... fingers crossed... they might be our childrens'.

Lovin' that avatar Darth_Pinche.

Yeah me too. This film was on when I first moved to Germany in 2004. It was ridiculous and really, really funny. Only their German was a bit hard to understand.

Anyway... people, we seriously need to chill. All of us.... or most of us anyway. The original post was really thoughtful and smart, although I don't share the feeling one hundred percent. But respect, Sam, well done. Shame it ended in a discussion involving chimpanzee shit.

Well... it IS a discussion among Trek-fans ;) :D

NOT THE SAME Berman-stamped (or likeBerman-stamped) THING.

That's one reason most posters are so excited about the new film---it's not the same Berman-stamped thing.

Note I had 'or likeBerman-stamped' there as well. By that I mean somebody who doesn't understand the material's appeal and so is putting it through his/her own taste-meter when a smarter sort with the wrong mindset would simply step away (sort of like the way Ken Ralston should have stepped away from trek once he realized he didn't like the enterprise design.)

It's not "like" Berman-stamped, either. The Trek XI trailer was actually dynamic.

Read the rest of the sentence, it is about somebody in charge who doesn't understand or respect the material, not how exciting the trailer was or wasn't cut.

The trailer for WATERWORLD was dynamic too, but somebody didn't understand that ROAD WARRIOR wasn't going to work on the water, to the tune of 200 mil.

Ah. So you mean "like Berman" not in plotting, story, tempo, style or editing but in some other, non-quantifiable manner. Good.

Why are we debating this, again?

A reminder, after reading through the last half of this thread.

This is freaking ridiculous guys. I know you're Trek fans, and I know you're passionate (one way or the other,) about Star Trek, including this forthcoming movie.

That does NOT mean that you can't behave like civilized people. That means, no flaming (fuck off, assholish, intellectual inflexibility) etc.) and no trolling each other to try to get a rise out of your opponent.

The problem that I'm seeing, not counting the flaming and such, is that SOME of you are INCAPABLE of discussing, or refuse to discuss a topic without getting personal.

That needs to stop in this forum. With traffic picking up as the movie approaches, it is intolerable.

I'm lurking in here as time allows. And I'm telling the mods here to crack down. If you can't be civil to one another, you will be warned. If I feel that you don't give a damn about the rules or civility, I have the option to remove you. That especially includes ANYONE who has returned on probation and I see several in this thread. Probation means CHANGING WAYS and AVOIDING WARNINGS.

We have a lot of new people coming in, drawn by the new movie, and they don't need this crap. It happened during the heyday of Voyager, the onset of Enterprise and now it has moved to this forum.

Make sure that you hear me. Because if you're removed from the board, I will do it personally and you'll be gone for good. And that goes for those who continue to rack up warnings as either brand-new troublemakers, or those who have been here for years.

This forum will NOT turn into a brawl. So recognize that I am putting you guys on notice. Behave or feel the Romulan boot on your ass. Because we have until May until it releases and you will NOT wear out the mods here with your antics.

Got it?

Good.

If not, on your own head be it. You've been warned.

Bonz the grouch.

Data would have loved this thread....

"Please continue with the petty bickering."

Note: said for humor, not for things to continue:)

I know this might be a shitty way to kind of change the topic, but I wonder if anyone had the reverse effect from this trailer. Instead of the Sobaring effect that Sam described, I wonder if anyone got really drunk after watching it or something? Those would probably be interesting stories.

Yeah, that's a nice segue. :techman:

Jesus, I go on vacation for a few days and chimpanzees shit all over my thread. :(

;)

Just saw the trailer for Wolverine (part of one of those surveys at the mall; got two dollars for my time :D ).

JJ's alleged Star Trek movie is in really deep trouble, because I don't see the ol' Canucklehead giving up the Number One slot at the box office without a major fight, and I don't think this turkey is up for it.

In other words, Wolverine looks damn good.
Ever think people will give both their money. Alot of people I've talked to are tired of the X-MEN right now so you never know how it will do. But I know Jackman has a big fanbase with the Drooling Masses.... OF WOMEN.....

Haha Had ya going there.

In another thread someone talked about modern audiences preferring to have their movies spoon-fed to them. And he was wrong about that.
Modern, flexible audiences can adapt and enjoy new versions of old stories or franchises.
Your display of intellectual inflexibility shows that you can't.
You and all those like you are actually the ones who want to be spoon-fed with the ever-same tasting, ever-same looking product.

That same-tasting shit is what so many folks on this board lapped up avidly from the late 80s up until early this century, ModernTrek (or as I prefer to call the nonDS9 part of that, CRAP!) and THOSE people whoe lapped that up are the ones who seem to be so happy about the Abrams ...

More of the same, more more more ... why can't YOU folks be happy with a few excellent things instead of a 1000 mediocre ones? You can spread out, WATCH OTHER SHOW, DO OTHER THINGS, in addition to seeing the show you like. If 'my kind' is complaining about what they're seeing, it is because we don't want to see the same-tasting shit -- or GL/imperial tasting shit -- with a TOS tag and arrowhead logo slapped on it. There's going to be other good SF out there on occasion, and I'll be watching for it, hoping for something between real ST TOS and FIREFLY -- which actually is a pretty big range for a variety of storytelling, NOT THE SAME Berman-stamped (or likeBerman-stamped) THING.

Well see now aren't we up on a high horse.

Let me list the things I likeed and watched on a given basis. No order of importance because I give it all my attention equally. Some of these are no longer on TV.

Trek, Transformers, The Prisoner, The original Avengers series, Get smart, Dukes of hazard, Knight Rider, The Incredible Hulk, Lost in Space, Time Tunnel. Planet of the apes. Sea Hunt, Seaquest DSV, Brimestone (there was a show that never got a fair shake) Babylon 5 (And yes I watched every damn episode) Space Rangers (Campy but fun) Space Truckers (That movie was so bad) MST3k, Oh the stuff goes on and on.

I've watched good Sci Fi and I've watched bad sci fi, Good comedy shows and bad comedy shows. I've kept current on some and left others by the way side.

It makes me wonder when did life get so damn sad that people have to take what is essentially and escape from their daily lives and make it into more than it needs to be.

Trek is first of and foremost ENTERTAINMENT, and when you raise it beyond that. When you give it MYTHIC status, you do it and all it's fans a great disservice because you then try to hold it to unattainable standards. If you find it as compelling and moving as Shakespear, that's fine, but Shakespear's plays were the fodder for the masses of his day. What can be seen as classic now when looked at in perspective is nothing more than entertainment for the masses of their age.

Kirk is not and will never be Hamlet, He's more like Doc Savage, the man of Bronze.

Hmmm That would be a neat remake.

You may say I'm not a picky as you are, but I'd like to think of my tastes as more ecclectic, I watch everything from Scrubs to Star Trek and I listen to everything from Beethoven to Busta, Most of the time those with more ecclectic tastes are more accepting of new interpretations.

Sam, I can't tell from just the trailer if your friend will ultimately be right, but I can see the comparison. Me, I liked the Lost In Space movie. It wasn't the TV show and that was a good thing. I'm less inclined to want a similar improvement in Star Trek, although a Voyager or Enterprise redux would have left me very cold.

The last thing Star Trek needs right now is a cerebral movie. It would totally put the franchise in the tank. Some of us would go and feel all fuzzy. Most folks wouldn't even bother to make it into the theater.

If a Lost In Space movie is what's necessary to keep Star Trek alive, then give me a Lost In Space movie.

Look at it this way. It's bound to be better than Nemesis.
