The Sobering Effect of the Star Trek XI Trailer

No I said if you READ (I work as a Karaoke host people who refuse to read what's written really irk me and that's what your doing on purpose and willfully being ignorant.) I said TDK and Trek are two DIFFERENT Creatures who worked for different reasons. Batman IS a dark Character. That's what he was created as. Trek is an optimistic property that's what it was created as.

But I really can't expect you to understand you've already made up your mind that you're not going to listen to anyone else because you're an expert on everything so I'm not going to even bother with you anymore.

Where the hell did I say Star Trek had to be dark? I said it had to be serious and have substance to it. Like the Dark Knight had. Empty, and shallow is not what Star Trek should be.

Don't sweat the negative reactions to your heartfelt post, Sam. It is a lovely and generous set of thoughts you offer, many of which I echo. It would be fantastic if this film does indeed find its place and time, whether that be with me or other fans of Trek or with a whole new audience. But, I'm at most mildly curious to see whether or not I personally find it entertaining, which is the exact sentiment I've held since the first teaser. What has been produced under the name Star Trek long ago ceased to embody the things I loved that went with that name, and I'm not really seeing anything here to make me believe that has changed. But more power to them with the project. IDIC and all that - what I call Star Trek does not in any way have to be all that Star Trek is.
Valid point.

The thing is, I think, it's easier to disregard variations on a theme like Voyager or Enterprise—they were never even trying to be "real" Trek. But something that says it's about Kirk, Spock and company... about the original NCC-1701... well, that's a different matter. It has a higher standard to live up to. If something presents itself as flat-out Star Trek, no caveats or subtitles, but comes across as if it were produced by George Lucas... (or hell, even if it came across as B&B-style technobabble)... if it just doesn't capture the classic Trek feeling, as the OP puts it (and the trailer doesn't capture it)... that's a lot harder to ignore.

How should a Trek-movie feel?
Easier to pin down what it shouldn't be than what it should, perhaps. "Not like Star Wars" is a good starting point.

Even in other media—some of the TOS novels capture it, and some don't. I think we could all agree on that (even if we'd argue over which ones).

So far here—and granted, we're all judging just by a few snippets of film in one trailer—Karl Urban seems to be nailing it in his take on McCoy, and Bruce Greenwood may have it in his portrayal of Pike, but on the rest the jury is still out.

To be as successful as 'Wars' would be nice though. ;)
I'd say though that Trek was often at it's best when it was like SW later was (only with a few more shades of grey with the good vs. bad) - 'Balance of Terror', 'Doomsday Machine', 'TWOK'...

Indeed, we have seen nothing to cast a final verdict - as some here have already done - on this film. :techman:

I've been thinking about this thread for a couple of days...I guess maybe because I was a bit surprised at your comments, Sam.

But then, I don't know why I should have been - I know that TOS is 'your' series and so yeah, this likely effects you alot more than it effects me.

TOS is the Star Trek of my youth. It's the Trek I came home from school to watch, and I have fond memories of it. I still like watching it, but I never really had any trouble moving on as the Trek universe expanded.

DS9 became the Star Trek of my adulthood. It is the reason why, in 2008, I am posting on a board like this, rather than thinking of Star Trek as something I once watched as a kid but now recall only as a distant memory.

Maybe for someone like me, it is easier to embrace this new thing. After all, I was one of the ones who embraced DS9 from day one...and when it came out it was VERY different than anything we'd seen on Star Trek before....making it's appearance in many ways, not unlike the situation we are in now. It was Star Trek...but it was a show based on a completely different model of Star Trek.

Interestingly, I actually got MORE excited and eager to see the film after viewing the trailer. I like the look of the sets for sure...and I was much relieved to discover that Chris Pine is alot better than I thought he was gonna be. I think the guy can actually pull this off.

I'm less sure of Zachary Quinto...but I feel alot better about Pine than I did last week.
