The Smegtastic Red Dwarf XI Thread

'Give and Take' is the best so far and yes there is an annoying flaw in the timeloop.

I hope they've given consideration yo how they'll end the series
Me too. The series doesn't need a heavy arc like series 8 but a destination or plan at least to show where things might be going. A satisfying cliffhanger that is actually thought out and resolved in a timely and interesting manner which I hope they did this time with series XI and XII been filmed back to back.

I really liked "Officer Rimmer". You know what you're in for with a title like that. :) And as Kryten said, multiple Rimmers are always a disaster. And always hilarious. Very "series 3-5" plot wise, and that's no bad thing. Loved it, predictable as it was.

The explanation for the kidneys is apparently that they came from the person who wrote "Not insane" in their own blood.

4: Lots of plot holes... actually, more character-slips (Rimmer's not the season one character any more, and if he was he'd try to make himself a new living body), but as high concept sf with jokes, pretty decent (I'm not a fan of 3-5, so that's praise from me).

That Rimmer wasn't able to touch anything. Since he became a hard light hologram he's able to have all the benefits of having a body without the ability to be harmed. So he likely has no reason to ever want a living body again.

Ah, that was the guy who killed himself? But he was bones so I'd say those kidneys wouldn't look that good. In any case an in episode explanation would have been nice even though it sounds a bit like Doctor Who's 'Before the Flood' using Bill and Ted logic again.

The other explanation for the kidneys is that Asclepius did actually want to keep Lister and the Cat alive, just "improved" by his own deranged surgical standards. Since he noticed Lister was missing two kidneys, he cloned some and was intending to implant them once he'd made his other modifications to the patients...

That makes about as much sense, if not more, than any other explanation! That was a good one aside from the kidney shaped plot hole ;)

Series 4 was the best for me, followed by 1,2,3,5,6,7,10,8,9. But hey, everyone's got a preference.

I'd really love a cat people episode. We could find out what happened to the ark that didn't fly straight into an asteroid.
Hell, even the one that did fly straight into an asteroid might've survived.

Rimmer's not the season one character any more
I've given up trying to figure out which Rimmer we're on, the 'original' hologram Rimmer suddenly became alive at the end of "Timeslides" (despite having the memories of the hologram) and promptly killed himself again, then another(?) hologram left to become Ace Rimmer in Series VII, he was resurrected with the rest of the crew in Series VIII and then from BTE onwards was a hologram again. Doug Naylor has said it's the 'original' Rimmer, but he somehow has the memories of the human Rimmer from VIII. I know the show has a lax attitude to continuity, and we're supposed to just accept it's the same character, but it's a bit all over the place.

"Officer Rimmer" I enjoyed, and I liked the fact that Kryten referenced "Me²", but again it was marred by a rushed ending. I think being on Dave and having to accommodate the ad break really hurts the show as they have less time to work with to stay within the 30 minute time slot. I'd like to see Dave commission longer episodes, with a 40-45 minute run time, to mitigate the time lost due to ad breaks. Not gonna happen I know, but it'd be nice.

'Officer Rimmer' was OK. Started out well but got predictable at the end and the last scene seemed to be cut too early by the credits. If this were season 3 they'd have the budget to show the monster explode or something.

It wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be with 50 Rimmer's running around. But not only was it cut very abruptly short, I now have to try and get the word "Rimmery" out of my head.

I have enjoyed this season. Probably the best since Rob Grant left. But, IMO, the show just hasn't been the same since his departure, no matter how hard Naylor tries. The scripts and jokes just aren't on the same level.

I'm somewhat disappointed with this series. I thought series X was a really good comeback season for Red Dwarf. There were a lot of great comedy moments. I think this series has a lot more science fiction concepts being explored and it's trying to be more like earlier series.

Krysis seemed decent to me. Got to give them points for making Nova 3 resemble Nova 5, and Butler had a slight feel of the original Kryten, despite basically being the modern version. And the Silicon Heaven line smoothed over any continuity conflict with The Last Day.
