The Sky's The Limit Spoilers

Richard White said:
I knew studying Czech and Slovak back in 1994 was going to come in handy one of these days.
Great! I'll send you the Czech edition of The Sky's The Limit when it comes out in 2009 :)

I could put it next to my copy of Dobrý voják Svejk. :D

One of my characters in Echoes of Coventry, Ensign Nemeckova, was named after one of my primary language instructors. If I get to keep writing Trek in the future, expect more Czech and Slovak natives to slip into Starfleet.

I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks for the link, Keith. I like the brief synopses because they helped me determine if I wanted to pick up the anthology or not (and I do).

Yeah, I guess that would work. I just figured that if they were getting a tour of the new Federation flagship, they must be fairly high up in the UFP higherarchy(sp), and IMO someone that important would most likely be from a member world.

Madeleine Albright was born in Czechoslovakia, which was not a member of the United States of America, but that didn't preclude her from becoming Secretary of State of the United States (although it did exclude her from the line of presidential succession). Where someone is "from" is not a singular question -- people can be born one place and then become citizens of another place. Albright was born in Prague but was "from" Denver from age 11 onward.

Huh, I'd never heard about her before. I didn't know you get that important of a possition if you were born in another country. This has deffinitely been a very informative discussion Chris, and I would like to thank you for that.

[ I don't wantto give this story away but there are alot of but there are nice character moments for Barclay as he saves the day with help from Ro and Lxwana. :rommie:I really have enjoyed reading all these stories so far. And want to tell all the authors thank you for all these great stories. :)

Glad you liked the BarclayRo/Lwaxana story. That was an interesting combination of characters to work with!

Just a few more Story reviews TurnCoats by Susan Swartz we get to see where events left off with the end of Face of the Enemy and the aftermath of the Rescue of M'Ret and his aides and Ensign Steven Deseve we get to see how his actions of staying in the Romulan Empire become in handy in this story. I don't want to give too much away but there's some nice insight into Romulan culture and the military. The Romulans are dealt with nicely in this story I really enjoyed it. Ordinary days by James Swallow it was nice to see Wesley Crusher's character get a story that makes him more human.Dealing with the choices you make and the consequences & the struggles he deals with. Great character Moments in this story With Beverly & Wesley there's a mystery and added up to some neat suprises. Amy Sisson's Twould Toll the Bells of Heaven I really liked the fact that Deanna Troi was in charge of an away with Data, Taurik and Dr Aron who was a scientist from a human colony studing a Saturn like planet and it's rings.I like the fact that Voyager and Cassini missions were mentioned. And the sciene exploration in the story is very up to date. The Mission goes wrong and they have an emergency with Shuttle getting damaged while exploring one of the moons. The scientists know something and don't want Deanna Troi to tell Enterprise what they found out. I won't spoil the ending but I really was glad to see Deanna & Data & Taurik working as a team and it was nice nod to Space exploration.

Ensign Steven Deseve

Okay, after reading Jeff's quick synopsis regarding DeSeve being called a "traitor", I have to ask (with apologies to Life of Brian) is that a joke name like "Sillius Saurus" or "Biggus D**kus"?

A bit on the nose, isn't it? :)

--Ted

I don't think Stefan DeSeve's name was pronounced like "deceive" in "Face of the Enemy." More like "de-sehv," I think -- which of course is how that French-derived name would properly be pronounced.

A few more stories to review Friends with sparrows by Christopher L. Bennett a Data story that has a linugist specialist Dr. Sofia Borges who wants Dta to alter his emotion ship to change it's language structure to communicate with the aliens we saw in the episode Darmok.Well complications ensue and go from bad to worse negotiations go wrong.Data has problems with the changes to his programming and the problems have to be resolved with help fro Deanna and Geordi have to help Data. I won't spoil the stories ending but it was nice to see Data dealing with his problems and finding a resolution to them. Suicide note by Geoff trowbridge takes place on Romulous during the events & aftermath In the Pale Moonlight. We see Picard meeting with Admiral Jarok's wife & Daughter. I was glad to see Picard meeting them and the discusioon of the events that transpired. A nice look into how his family coped wih what happened after jarok defected and the message Picard delivered to them. I really liked this Story alot. Four lights by Keith R.A. DeCandido is a tour de force story that takes place during the Dominion war that packs a punch. We see how the war is affecting Picard protecting a planet from being invaded by Dominion troops and the loss of so many Starfleet ships and crew.Enterprise is called to another scetor for another assignment, when they get a distress call from a Cardassian ship which has been badly damaged. They beam the survivors onto Enterprise one of them is Gul Madred.I have to say Keith pulled out all the stops with this story and that it's a very powerful story. When old wounds are ripped open how does Picard deal with an enemy like Gul Madred. I don't want to give it away but it gives you alot to think about long after you finish reading this story. :cardie: I'll just say Madred is in for a suprise.

The Tamarians are back! Sweet. :D Darmok has always been one of my favorite TNG episodes. Same goes for Chain of Command.

^^"Darmok"'s my favorite TNG episode of all time, which is why I was eager to follow up on it. By the way, on my website there's now an essay I wrote on the Tamarian language, which was part of my research for the story (and contains no spoilers for the story).
