The sheer emotion of that trailer

Just to be devil's advocate here....

What separates unadulterated gushing like this from people being critical of the same information?

Yet the people who criticize (admittedly there are some who go way over the top) get jumped on.

My two cents was this felt like any other sci-fi/action trailer with the same generic music. Lots of explosions and leaden lines. I hope the real movie adds some meat to the bones.

I guess one could argue that this is actually a significant improvement over the trailers for Nemesis and Insurrection.

Seriously.

What separates a compliment from an insult? Why is positivity preferable to negativity?

There are enthusiasts at both extremes (every extreme?) but most of the folks here discussing this are willing to allow that others may see things differently and grant them room to do so.

The trailer music is done by Two Steps From Hell. It's a modified version of the piece "Freedom Fighters" off their album Legend.
Thanks! Too bad it's not Giacchino's score but - imho - it makes this trailer.

I'm in the goosebump, misty-eyed crowd, too, despite my initial ambivalence. It happened, of all things, when the E was flying through the debris field after Kirk's little salute. The thought appeared in my heart (not my head): "They're getting it right. Oh my goodness, they're getting it right..."

Tear. Almost.

First post, btw. Old-timer who's bled TOS since catching "Arena" on a Saturday afternoon in 1974. Kirk sparing the Gorn turned my third grade world upside down ("Wha? Don't the good guys always kill the monster?"). Never been right since.

I'll try to keep my nose clean.

Im not one for getting emotuional over things like this.

But dammn. That trailer kicks some serious ass.

The voiceover added from Pikes conversation adds a real epic feel to the trailer.

The visuals are by far some of the best i ever seen. on a 1080 42" screen is something else, a cinema wont even be that clear.

Seriosuly, it feel sike Trek, although it doesnt much look like Trek.

Really really cool looking, lets hope this jumped up defribulator for trek works.

I hope, in all seriousness, I don't have to sit near any of you in the cinema. I want to hear the fucking film and not your endless crying as the 'moment' keeps overcoming you.

the only emotion i felt watching the trailer was disappointment. i really, genuinely, WANT to like this film but every trailer i've seen since the teaser makes me think; 'oh, god. oh, jesus. that looks so crap. that looks NOTHING like Star Trek.'

the teaser, building the ship, with Nimoy's voice over and the Kennedy sound clip? shivers down my spine. this? no.

I have to agree that the teaser was definitely the most effective of all the teasers / trailers seen so far. I don't dislike the newest trailer, it looks like a great action flic - but is it good Star Trek? Remains to be seen.

I hope they could do many prequels and not get into TOS proper as I'd like to imagine the two Kirks being the same somehow. A t.v. spin off with another captain and same universe would be great. This new universe looks great. Now if the Klingons and the Romulan histories could be explained better, and different from TNG, as different branches of Humanity, I will be very happy. Humanoid ridges to a minimum. The eye likes to see beautiful things not disfigurement.

My two cents was this felt like any other sci-fi/action trailer with the same generic music.
What could they have changed to alleviate that? What would make it feel unique? I don't understand this criticism, is all... it was full of Star Trek.

The most vocal criticism on this board come from people who intend to hate everything in advance, hate everything during, and then afterward tell us how right their self-fulfilling prophecy was.

At both ends of the spectrum are the extreme gushers and the extreme haters, and while both are stupid, the extreme gushers are more tolerable. But whatever your side is, use something called common sense to back it up. Don't bitch and moan about zeros in starship registry numbers or say the whole movie will be for nothing if Gary Mitchell isn't in it for 45 seconds, or claim that TOS and the TOS movies will somehow be erased if this movie is successful. And be willing to admit you're wrong if you are (which the extreme haters will never do).

If the movie's good, it's good. If the movie's bad, it's bad. While there will be haters who go into the movie with the sole purpose of hating every second of it even if it's good, I doubt the gushers will claim to love every second of it even if it's bad.

If TREK is going to die, if this movie is the last thing the franchise ever produces then shes going to die a death worthy for a king...standing tall and not fading out of existence with a wimper :)

Sit on the other side of the theater. I paid my ticket price and if I happen to get a little emotional, too bad. I'm allowed to enjoy the movie, too.
