Considering your comments so far your mind is made up about the movie, don't waste your $10...I am more than happy to waste my £5 to see it and if its bad I will say so just because am excited doesn't mean I will be a total gusher, after all I was excited about Nemesis and that was well

Well, I wouldn't be spending that much to see it even if it were WATCHMEN. When I go see a movie I don't spend more than I would to buy the DVD of it, and usually I buy DVDs used. I see matinees, which usually cut down on the amount of people and illness and noise in the theater, as well as being less expensive.
I haven't bitched about ALL of it ... the trailer music is very nice, even if it isn't in the movie proper, and the KELVIN battle stuff looks pretty good. There might be $6.50 of entertainment, plus I can write it off as a business expense. have to see if tickets for local matinees go up again between now and May ...

I think the reason the trailer is affecting so many of us, is because we are already emotionally vested in these characters (in Star Trek as a whole as well). This movie may be a reboot/re---whatever, but the characters are still familiar to most of us. Even if they are going to be portrayed in a new way.
Also, the music. Music can be very powerful. It can ruin a movie for me, or make me cry like a baby. The combination of imagery, voiceover and imagery was definitely enough to pull something out of us (or at least me).
In general, the trailer makes the movie look epic, action packed and adventurous.
Combine all of that, and it makes for a good trailer.

That's still the November trailer, though. There's a new one.
Now, that is an excellent trailer. The years of disappointment with the mediocrity that is Berman got washed away. I am actually beyond excited for a Trek film....

And I think that is the key. I accept that it was bloody well made trailer, yet, I really couldn't get exited. To me they were not Kirk and Spock, they were just some other people in colourful pajamas. Maybe it will "click" for me at some point, maybe it will not. Who knows how these things work, Brosnan or Dalton never felt like Bond to me, Moore and Craig work just fine. *shrug*
Besides, weren't the trailers for SW prequels kinda nifty too? If I go to the theatre with the expectation for this film to be a "Phantom Menace"-level bad, at least I will not be that badly disappointed, and there is a good chance that I will be positively surprised.

I've only ever cried after one Star Trek movie: The Undiscovered Country. That was a great movie, but that isn't the feeling I want from this movie. I want the opposite - the feeling that I had walking out of ID4, like I could and should be able to fly my car out of the theatre parking lot.

That is exactly what I fear. The feeling that I had walking out of ID4. Jesus. That was one craptastic film. Mindless action and expensive special effects. It is absolutely one of the worst films ever made. I shudder to think that some people hope that Trek XI will be like that.
No, no, no. You've got me all wrong. I realize that ID4 had some serious problems - after the fact. But see, the thing is that I don't go to movies to pick them apart. I go to enjoy myself.
Sure, you realize things afterward - or have them pointed out to you - like that the AIs in The Matrix could have saved themselves a lot of time and trouble by powering themselves with the electrical impulses of cows kept happy with simulated 4 bit grass. But if you're like me, while you're watching it, all you care about is "I know kung-fu."
I would prefer that the story of the upcoming Trek movie hold together better than ID4 did - or more importantly, better than ST: Nemesis did. But what I really want is to feel Star Trek again. And if the movie manages that, I'll forgive a starship being built inside the gravity well. Probably even rationalize it, and come back here and argue with you about it. Which will be value-added entertainment.

I liked what Pike said prior to his "your father was captain" line:
"I couldn't believe it when the bartender told me who you are..."
It certainly establishes that James Kirk is somebody of note and reputation well before becoming the hero was was destined to be.
