If the mainstream Mormon church says these offshoots aren't Mormon...they aren't. That's the end of it, really.

Any church body has the authority to say whether or not a group *claiming* membership in that church actually has the right to do so. LDS leadership, for example, has the near-absolute right to say who is a Mormon and who is not; the Episcopal Church has a similar right to not recognize these breakaway groups who quit because of the Robinson thing; etc.

In general, you can't break away from a group and yet still lay claim to membership in that group. Kind of like the Maquis and the Federation. ;)

Well said, yeah, they can call themselves mormons or LDS or whatever, but they aren't.

And to the rest of you: The pursuit of happiness is not pornography. You can deceive yourselves everyday forever. But pornography never was and never will be a tenet of happiness.

I said before that I don't see how pornography could be made illegal altogether and I am not sure how much it would accomplish if it was.
But it is still wrong.

So do you feel that the government should enforce your belief over my personal freedom?

Well like I said in the post you quoted, I don't see how they could make pornography illegal or how they would enforce it, but I would certainly push for measures that make it harder to obtain, especially harder to stumble upon accidently like on the internet, not necessarily criminalize it though.
 
I'm more in favour of keeping it out of children's hands, but less in favour of the government stepping in.
That said, something should be done about those who push it so that it can go beyond the filtering software.

People standing in a ring fighting each other and possibly inflicting serious brain damage on one another is fine. People running around torturing others to find out where Habib Marwan is is fine. Television shows encouraging you to eat more than you need to live are fine.

However, depicting people having SEX (:eek:) is WRONG!

I think it's reasonable as it is. In regards to making it harder to obtain, well the most effective way is for parents to pay attention to their kids habits. You won't catch everything obviously, but it's a lot better than Mr. PC & Mr. TV doing the job for them. The government can stay as far away from sex as possible as far as I'm concerned.

Hear hear! I am an avid porn lover, let's get that out of the way. I love porn. Had it not been for the internet, i would be very lonely. Anyway, that being said, i understand that there are a lot of people that do not like porn. That is indeed your right. However, if you don't like, don't look at it, get blockers for your computer, and don't try to take it away from those that do like it.

Because, to a healthy adult, beauty and eroticism are just as legitimate as any other form of art.

But basically in a few words: perversion, objectification of women, disruption of many marriage relationships, potential for very harmful addictions. Misconceptions on what is a healthy sexual relationship, etc.

I can think of worse ones to have, but really addictions to anything are simply the sign of a deeper psychological issue, regardless of what the addiction is to. But then even though this was your major talking point in the other thread, you were never able to prove any of it.

Not really. In fact, it can give you some great ideas on things to try out, since not everyone wants to stick to just missionary style. ;)
 
They would have to ban religion first, I know of many more children and adults that have been scarred by religion than by porn.

Huh ? They like porn so obviously they don't want to see it banned ? That's your argument ?

The people who have disagreed with you here have given perfectly valid arguments to support their cause. Captain X in particular has, quite thoroughly, debunked your arguments.

The temperance movement was based on the same moralistic bullshit, so yeah, the only people who would agree with you would probably be just the people who already believe as you do. The rest of us are slightly more reasonable in that for the most part, if we don't think something harms anyone, like porn, we see no problem with it. Alcohol you'd have more of an argument against and even there I'd be against banning it outright just because of the abuses of others, but that's a subject for another thread.

It's nice to know that you resort to statements like this though when your other assertions are proven to be bunk though. It seems very obvious that you can't back up any of your assertions with fact, and that you refuse to acknowledge any facts which don't agree with your assertions. Just the bit about married couples is proof of that by itself.

Your refusal to quit it even for a time is proof enough that is thing to be avoided.

I hope that someday this will not be the case.

By the way, I feel like I should repeat something I said in a previous thread. I do not mean to sound like I think I am perfect, everyone has problems and weaknesses. Everyone struggles with something.

You're right, it is dangerous. It's too easy to obtain. If it were more difficult, I might actually be motivated to find a girlfriend. As it is, those desires are far easier to satisfy in other ways. Damn porn for keeping me a virgin all this time.....
