The SCOTUS hands Pr0n lovers a huge victory

I am starting to wish I had a dime for every time I read someone posting "as long as it doesn't hurt someone else"....

I could certainly quit my job and just post on here full time.

What's the matter with the argument, though? The potential for harm to others is really the basis for nearly every law on the books, so it strikes me as a relevant point in this case.

Well the basis of the law struck down was to protect children and minors from viewing pornography. I don't know how you would draft a law that says you CAN"T look at porno.

But my reference to your "argument" is just because it seems to be the main defense. I mean just because something is not illegal and doesn't "hurt other people" doesn't mean it is good and we should do it.

Not only is this a good decision on the part of the Court, but I find it very encouraging that a significantly Right Wing-leaning Court is upholding American Values.

Especially if you started with Thomas Jefferson. ;)

I think, in the end, that's up to parents. But let's face it, no matter what you do, if they want to kids under 18 are going to find a way to get it. That's pretty much how it's always worked, and I don't see it changing any time soon.

Okay, sure. But like, say, drinking alcohol or smoking, it's a personal choice. And that's pretty much that, IMO.

Perhaps it is just a personal choice. I still think that just as people crusade against drinking and smoking, people who have seen the destructive forces of pornography should also speak out.

And people who rallied against drinking gave us the mob, which then ended up giving us the illegal drug trade, which has lead to more americans sitting in jail for non-violent crimes...

I'm sorry, but if you don't like it that is fine. But just because you don't like doesn't make it "wrong" or that it should be illegal.

Yeah, it's kind of one of our basic American Values. ;)

haha, doing what you want as long as no one else gets hurt certainly not one of those basic American values...
It absolutely is. It's one of the things that makes us different from most, if not all, other civilizations in history. If something "neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg," then there is no legitimate grievance.

I just don't think that the founding fathers would have appreciated the constitution begin held up as a protection for children below 18 to view pornography.

I have plenty of problems with the porn industry, but COPA was just bad law.

I read a little on it and its predecessor and they do seem to be written poorly. Maybe they will get it right next time.
By the way, very nice avatar.

Liberty loves Justice. :)

They still can. Their right to speak out has not been infringed. Drinking, smoking and porn are all legal, and yet you can still attempt to educate people on what you believe are the harmful effects thereof.

Yes, we can :)

Thanks to my sister, the Disney Channel has been damaging me ever since I came home. Can we make that illegal too please?

And to the rest of you: The pursuit of happiness is not pornography. You can deceive yourselves everyday forever. But pornography never was and never will be a tenet of happiness.

I said before that I don't see how pornography could be made illegal altogether and I am not sure how much it would accomplish if it was.
But it is still wrong.

There was a whole other thread dedicated to this topic, and I don't feel like debating it again. I'll just provide a link. But I really won't debate that issue again. This is just the top hit on an internet search I did.

If you don't want to debate it, don't post links to articles full of erroneous information and deliberate misinformation. That article doesn't even nail down the nature of pornography itself, let alone why it is "wrong".
