The Romulan Supernova: The final, canon word

We know little about melding: the 2009 movie is the first time it is used for making a presentation. All other meldings have appeared to involve sucking in of knowledge from the victim, while dialogue has implied that the experience is shared in full and both parties go carefully through all the knowledge being sucked. So we really don't know if it is even possible to lie in a meld... But Spock is an acknowledged master liar, and supposedly no slouch when it comes to melding, either.

Because Spock is not a manic mass murdered?

Yes.

Depends on who is writing him. We've seen that he is willing to do things which he perceives as being logical but would horrify others. Certainly lying, killing and mental rape are within his repertoire if he deems them necessary.

Indeed. Vulcans murder calmly and logically.

Perhaps Spock's logic told him that the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the few, and came up with some Jack Pack style situation.

Spock uses red matter or trilthium or similar to stealthily trigger a supernova of Romulus - with a few years notice, giving enough time to evacuate the planet -- this would lead to aversion of a conflict that's brewing (as predicted by Sloan), and reunification of the Romulan and Vulcan people, with minimum if any loss of life. The timescale is short enough that the Romulans need help from the Federation to evacuate on time, further cementing the bond. Perfectly logical - he'd been working for over 100 years to reunify Romulus and Vulcans, and this was the last chance.

The attack on Mars was not predicted, meaning the Federation pull out, which didn't leave Spock with much time to come up with a new plan. He thinks he can still accomplish his goals (reunification and peace) by sacrificing himself so that the Romulans think that the Vulcans at least, were willing to go all out to try to save them.

Spock doesn't want this evil plan filtering through the Pine-Kirk though. Kirk being young, rash, and undisciplined and completely new to mind melds, easilly falls for whatever the old experienced Spock fabricates.

It's a well written theory but aside from not having any evidence in canon, this business of Spock causing the supernova disrupts the Spock character far more than "promising to save a planet, but not really I'm just buying a few weeks maybe" does.

The novel says the nova causes disruption in a 10 lightyear radius. While that’s big it’s still a small percentage of the Romulan Star Empire so it wouldn’t be that much of a big deal.

Actually...

When they adjusted the estimate from 9.7 to 10 light years, they make it clear that covers 10 more worlds, so this area of Romulan space seems to have been pretty densely occupied, not like say the 10 light years around our system. Considering these are also likely the core worlds of the Romulan Star Empire, the oldest settled after Romulus, the damage to the Empire and the fact that they could not stop the disaster or save many of their people likely greatly upset the balance of power in that region of space.

Artificial ways, yes. Is there anything shown that suggests it was done deliberately?

Federation scientists are asking that very question, as well as at least one Romulan scientist. I'm about two-thirds of the way through the book.

I actually find the story in the novel far more interesting than the story in Picard, so far.

Guys, they retconned it. That's it. Never mind about Spock and his mind melds. BrainGenius Alex Kurtzman decided to shitcan what they said in 2009. That's it.

Yeah, the novel seems to be making a big deal about the fact that the supernova can't possibly be natural, which makes me think they're setting up something from later in the season.
Sounds like they are adapting some part of the STO story-line.

Kurtzman. Is. Not. The. Showrunner. Of. Picard.
It's an alternate universe in his mind.
That's the only explination.

It you look at the star charts it’s still only a small percentage of the Empire.
