The Roddenberry Archive / OTOY

I've been having the guilty pleasure of triggering the shuttle elevator on the lower level and then running over to it to ride up the next level. Who knew how fun that could be! :D

I'm also happily surprised that engineering retained the corridor in front of it too. So many neat things to check out.
That sounds fun!
Did you find any way of summing the turbolifts? In my first exploration of the Cargo Deck I ran off the edge of the mid level and was stranded at the bottom! :brickwall:

Yeah, I did the same thing. I got around it by turning on “free cam” in the options and flying up to another deck.

My dream is a full ship 1701-A at ST IV launch config to go from Shuttle Bay. Star Trek V and VI variants reusing some of the refit (perhaps slightly modernized) would have been better than the reuse of TNG sets.
That would be cool, there was a Good Morning (or somesuch) tour of the sets by James Doohan on Youtube until a year or so ago, and they gave them red carpets in the corridors and engineering had new green neon lights in the intermix chamber (or so it looked) but we never saw it on film.

My dream has always been the Star Trek V engineering section (which I know is just the Jeffries tube with control panels and lights suggesting at a horizontal intermix chamber.

I'd also get a kick out of Star Trek VI TNG engineering, and IIRC Lora Johnson mapped out a hybrid of V and VI that sort-of works.

Star Trek 2009/Into Darkness engineering is a pipe dream, since they're real-world locations too big for the inside, but they are fascinating to me and I'd love to explore. The 2009 shuttlebay was recreated in the 2013 videogame and that was excellent, and since the Into Darkness shuttlebay was a mix of CGI and location shooting (the Lawrence Livermore fusion reactor, which was also engineering on the Vengeance), that's plausible. Star Trek Beyond's engineering was almost all-CG too (and barely seen) so I can see that working if they got hold of the original files.

Voyager was mapped out in the old Elite Force videogame expansion pack, adding areas we never saw like the computer core if they wanted to go crazy with it.

I didn't run into any problems with summoning the turbolifts from the cargo deck as the doors opened when I approached them. However an alternate route to go up one level without using the turbolift is to go to the control panel (that operates the main cargo door and cargo deck floor) near the turbolift and activate/close the floor. Immediately walk to the middle of the cargo deck floor that is directly between the two lift tubes. That floor will raise up to the next level after the floors slide closed. :) It might take a try or two to get the timing right.

Also, I found that the shuttle that is in the launch position on the flight deck can be launched if you walk right up to it which is cool! I tried to observe the shuttle door mechanism open and close which I think is mimicking how the old shuttle doors work.

Had another play around this afternoon. I can't believe there isn't an option to activate the self-destruct sequence on the TSFS Enterprise bridge!

Also really enjoying the Defiant set. It's so efficient and compact, that tiny transporter bay! Looking forward to seeing the engineering set, mess hall, sickbay and maybe even an extrapolation of the shuttlebay! Would be fun to launch one of those shuttles from the drop launch bay.

In the TMP and WoK engine rooms, if you active free look you can go down the shaft and see all the (sadly but understandably featureless) decks from the painted extension!!

I just wish I could use the same to explore the decks above Engineering on the Strange New Worlds Enterprise. Does anyone know a proper noclip mode?

That actually confused me a little because, while it's accurate to the actual set, in the movie Kirk uses the magic of editing to walk in from a corridor to the upper level of engineering (in both movies, actually), but there's no exit from the upper level.

It's less clear in TWOK, maybe a new entrance was fitted in between the movies? Perhaps even one of the single-person lifts?

However, for TMP when kirk enters the Engine Room from a long straight corridor and through an entrance foyer, I am still sticking to my suggestion from this thread from a few years back:
https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/blssdwlfs-tos-enterprise-wip.119751/post-8905828
The scenario is that Kirk is trying to find a quiet spot to break the bad news to Decker:

1) Kirk arrives at the upper level and peers over the railing. He spots Decker and takes the starboard-fore lift down to the main level.
2) Something (or someone!) catches his eye on the lower level and he pauses to gaze over the railing for moment. He then realises that in the meantime Decker has taken the port-aft lift to the upper level!
3) Since the upper level is a nice quiet spot to speak privately to Decker, Kirk takes the starboard-fore lift up to join him. However, Decker was only up there to collect a report from an underling and has now rejoined Scotty on the main level. Kirk sees this shortly after stepping off the lift and moving to the railing.
4) This puts Kirk's back up a bit - Decker couldn't possibly be avoiding him on purpose, could he? Kirk walks smartly to the port-aft lift and rides it down, no doubt cursing the absurdly slow speed of the lifts and wondering if a ladder could be fitted somewhere instead.
5) Kirk does not take his eye off Decker this time until he finally gets to speak to him.

It's a bit of an absurd scenario, but then it's an absurd camera shot too. However, it might explain Kirk's extra abruptness when dealing with Decker, whose cheery attitude would merely fuel suspicions in Kirk's mind that the young captain was leading him a merry dance on purpose. Kirk's terse "let's talk" before leading Decker over the FOYER of all places to publicly demote him would naturally follow; Kirk would have preferred somewhere private to do this, but he's wasted enough time chasing Decker around Engineering already!

I had fun in the forced perspective vs in universe views, which made me appreciate some of the magic. It also means that the area behind the intermix chamber where it forks to the nacelles should have probably have a wall and door or access panel there since no ship would waste that much space and it would be useful for emergency batteries or life support air tanks, etc.

It also seems obvious there would need to be some ladders as well as those little lifts in engineering.

Which I see the TWOK engineering set provided at least one ladder. Definite improvement. Little touches like the extinguishers and respirators really complete the set. I'd like to think those should have been on the TMP version but they didn't get time to install them or other finishing touches due to the rush to launch to out to see V'ger. Wonder if there'd be room for on screen TMP version as listed and a hybrid TMP with TWOK that had a doorway to the Dilithium chamber (or perhaps it's in the next room but not directly accessible from the intermix area - not entirely implausible).

Looking at the TWOK intermix chamber I am noticing there are some green specks in it, most noticeable looking down from the lower level.

I'd also get a kick out of Star Trek VI TNG engineering, and IIRC Lora Johnson mapped out a hybrid of V and VI that sort-of works.

That would be great!

Playing with the TNG transporters (and the glitch if you keep beaming in and out) was fun. Need that added to the TMP and TWOK transporters. TMP could have that poor lady screaming maybe.

Adding the Star Trek V shuttles and launch in the hangar (if not an emergency "Plan B" landing) as well could be fun.

In TMP you can see an entrance into the upper level of engineering. Presumably that entrance leads to a foyer that connects the corridor he walked in from. On the 3D version there is a door modeled there and also mirrored on the other side of the octagon :)

Been a blast going over these in more detail. So many areas could be added in the refit through 1701-A seen in the other movies.

Torpedo bay from TWOK is obvious and relatively minor changes for TMP and TVH and TUC.

Similar for the quarters for Kirk and Spock from TMP and TWOK with the lobby area. Can well imagine the cargo and hangar area in TFF version (which just had the main door closed).

The detention area from TFF should probably be at least slightly different due to the dialogue there where Spock said he helped redesign to be more secure...

TWOK Sickbay seems to be missing the sign at McCoy's office with his name and position (CMO). Would need to look for that screen shot.

The lounge with the ship wheel's. The back areas that have the piping Scotty hit his head on.

The Galley and food preparation area and crew quarters from Star Trek VI. All of these should have versions from the TMP and TWOK through launch 1701-A from TVH and the later more mature and lived in version from TUC.

Then some functionality. In addition to nice gags on transporters and what not, being able to launch out in a shuttle or even Workbee would be laudable as would being able to go from impulse to warp from the helm station and/or set a course at nav.

I just discovered that today. I know there is no door on the set, but do we ever see that there is no door on the upper level in the film?
