The reason this movie could never have been a mega-hit

Because I would think LOTR would be in an analagous situation with Trek since the Lord of the Rings books have such a history and have a similar set of nit-picking fans.

Not really analogous in any way. LotR films were an adaptation of respective books, so people going into it knew they didn't have to read the book, as the films were based on them. STXI however has 10 films and hundreds of hours of television, not to mention books and comics preceding it, and potential newcomers might be unsure as to weather they need to see any of that or not to understand it.

Not sure that constitutes any sort of a reason why the movie can't be a hit, though, unless you're talking about Titanic- or Lord of the Rings-type mega-hit numbers, but I don't think anyone ever seriously expected that to happen

These three movies are among the most successful movies in the history of film, and certainly among the most successful of this generation. There's really no comparison to Star Trek.

The difference is LotR films describe the same events that the books do, while STXI offers a new story in the already established universe(or in this case forks out another universe ).

I do agree that it's a dumb excuse not to see the movie, but there is a difference...

Fellowship was already a mega-hit; The Two Towers and Return of the King saw increases, but not huge increases that put the film in a whole other league. Batman Begins/The Dark Knight is still the most hopeful (and helpful, hopefully) comparison.

With any luck then the next movie will do much better because anyone who likes this movie will get the DVD, sit their doubting friends down, and say "look here's some popcorn, just watch the movie!"

I can't believe that Trek fans are still bad mouthing this movie.

Is it the best movie ever made? No

Did JJ Abrams do a damn good job making an enjoyable movie that anyone could like though? Yes

Is it a mega hit? It's only the biggest movie this year and will not drop to far from that this year. The only movie that really has a shot at topping it is Transformers. So even if the worst happens and it gets passed by that movie.The 2nd biggest movie in a year is a mega hit.

I think the big reason why this movie isn't a mega hit is because there's no real reason to like that douchbag of a character named Kirk. He's the main character that your supposed to like, support and believe in but he has no redeeming qualities.
