The reason this movie could never have been a mega-hit

Norrin Radd

Vice Admiral
I was talking to an acquaintance the other day, asking him if he'd seen Star Trek yet. He's the type who likes to go to new blockbuster films like this.

He said he hadn't gone because he thought you had to be a Star Trek "fan" to really understand and appreciate the film...like Star Trek belonged to some kind of exclusive club.

I told him otherwise, but the damage was already done.

Imagine...how many more people are there like him?

Not enough, considering the box office numbers.

I give your friend credit. He understands what Star Trek is, understands that you can't walk in on this movie and call your self a fan because you enjoyed it. Your friend is a man of integrity and conviction who appreciates the depth and complexity of what makes Star Trek what it is.

Millions.

Not sure that constitutes any sort of a reason why the movie can't be a hit, though, unless you're talking about Titanic- or Lord of the Rings-type mega-hit numbers, but I don't think anyone ever seriously expected that to happen

Yes. Star Trek is a closed up club and you can only enter by watching the five series and 10 movies that came before this movie. :wtf:

This kind of thinking isn't going to bring in new fans, which we need to keep the franchise alive.

If a person can't enjoy something as deep and complex as Trek prior to this movie, then they don't have integrity and conviction and therefore are not a friend of mine.

It is possible they never tried because they never knew how deep Trek was and can be.

deep and complex.

Trek.

don't get me wrong. it ain't light and shallow. but it's not the ONLY thing "deep and complex" people can enjoy!

I think its the more extreme fanatics that scare off potential newcomers more than the actual shows themselves. The lunatic fringe of Trekkies seems to be the one that gets the most attention in the media.

Too many, mostly due to the minority of fans who are fanatics. The vocal minority tend to scare away many who would otherwise be fans.

Agreed. Fanaticism does tend to destroy its own cause. I'm sometimes ashamed to admit to even liking trek purely because of the uniform wearing fanatical fringe. They maybe a minority, but they're the ones that end up on TV in the weirdo documentary of the week.

Speaking of, do any of you mines of information happen to know how Fellowship of the Ring did in comparison to the other movies? Because I would think LOTR would be in an analagous situation with Trek since the Lord of the Rings books have such a history and have a similar set of nit-picking fans.

I know seriously.
Trek can be deep at times, but it sure doesn't hold a monopoly on the title.
Most decent drama series do well in that department, at least at times.

But unlike with Trek, general audiences had very limited preconceptions about LOTR.
