I enjoyed it very much. Kept me engaged the whole way through.

and while most people could care less, I want a little more explanation about Nardole. How did he get involved with River and because the Doctor reattached his head, Nardole's his lacky/butler/assistant now? I don't really understand why the Doctor took him aboard?

This companion could well be the new Martha: She doesn't have superpowers, she isn't the pivot of the universe, and she gets where she wants by her own merit instead of magic.

Has Moffat finally learned his lesson? Better late than never!

Or Moffat knows that he doesn't have multiple seasons to develop the character and spin mysteries around her, so he's almost forced by circumstances to keep Bill "simple."

Great.
I thought that was magnificent and I haven't enjoyed watching an episode that much in ages. It might even be my favourite Capaldi episode to date, or certainly one of them. I'd been wary of Bill, simply because of how she came across in the trailers, but I thought she was great. Sweet, funny, creepy, clever but not too timey-wimey, loved the callbacks to Susan and River and whilst the Clara/memory wipe reference was clear I liked how it worked as a callback to Donna as well.

Loved the Dalek interlude and Movellans! (even though we'd seen them in the trailers). Lucas continues to impress as well, but really this is Capaldi's show. He's just so comfortable in the role now. Shame this is his last season not his first but let's just hope the rest of the season is as good as the opening.

I liked the episode. I liked Bill. It wasn't love at first sight like Clara, it took me about 10 minutes, but she's fun. And she's clever, but not in an obnoxious way like River. She'll be a good change of pace.

And Capaldi is finally a professor being followed by a "student,"...this is what I imagined he'd be like when he was first cast in the role. Better late than never. I'm going to enjoy their interaction.

The puddle monster girl was lame. I consistently rolled my eyes.

Capaldi had a few moments where he was very much like Tennant. There was even one line that he delivered just like Tennant used to...I can't recall it right now. I enjoyed that.

4/5 all around, I'd say.

Plus, she has the added bonus of there being no chance of her falling in love with The Doctor, and in one episode she's about 100 times more interesting then Martha ever was. but, besides that, I get what you mean. Just a normal person, more of a kind of companion we'd see in old who (although written with more complexity nowadays, obviously).

Having thought about the episode for awhile, I do have one disappointment: I miss The Doctor meeting a companion simply by chance. We haven't had that since Martha (although technically true with Donna's second appearance) and I really miss that aspect about the first meeting between The Doctor and the future companion.

Moffat knows that he doesn't have multiple seasons to develop the character and spin mysteries around her, so he's almost forced by circumstances to keep Bill "simple."

A similar thought occurred to me when watching The Husbands of River Song - Clara had at last gone, there wasn't going to be another episode for a full year (even longer for the new series), the new companion had yet to be chosen and River's journey was complete, so for once we could stop to smell the roses. Normally by the time the Christmas special aired the next series would be well underway and so he'd be continually dropping hints, setting up future mysteries and whispering "spoilers" - but in 2015 that wasn't an option: there was no future yet written for him to spoil.

This year could be the same - he can't just keep driving up empty hype and putting things off for next year because he won't be there next year. He finally has to knuckle down, cut the crap and get on with it.

Yeah, I said fries, deal with it. To me. chips are what you Brits call "crisps."
I say chips when I'm discussing British shows. And things like "take the piss".

At least we won't have to deal with her unrequited pining for the Doctor.

Wait till you find out what a fanny is to Brits.

And why exactly DO Americans call them chips when they are clearly sliced rather than chipped?
As for faggots... and then there's the Aussies who innocently asked for durex... And of course, whether "you old bugger/ bastard" is affectionate or insulting...
English: a language designed to embarrass people from slightly different backgrounds!

Glad to see the first episode has met with favourable reviews. I still don't have SPACE here in Canada, so I won't be able to watch it for a year or so once it hits dvd. I'll probably peek at the screencaps once they're up on the various sites. :D

Some other thoughts:

* I hope there's going to be some sort of very satisfactory payoff for the Susan reference. Even satisfactory would do.

* Bill's already about a zillion times more interesting that the incredibly boring and dreary Martha ever even looked like having a chance of being.

Off topic thought:

* the correct term is chips. And although the term has fallen out of usage as our idioms (sadly) become more Americanised, there are still plenty of Australians who find references to "rooting" for anything quite amusing.

Doctor Who 10.01 'The Pilot' Review

The first episode of Series 10. It is an interesting beginning to the new series. It certainly makes me wonder what is going to happen. There are many aspects to the episode that give rise to questions. Questions about what the Doctor has been doing since he had saved New York from Harmony Shoal. Also questions about what makes Bill special, compared to others he had met at the university while he was there. More than 50 years seems to be a long time for him to be in one place, but more on that later.

Nardole isn't much expanded upon, but it is obvious that his body (at least) is mechanical (mechanical enough for parts to fall out of his arm). He is assisting the Doctor with whatever that vault is containing. (Gallifreyian writing is visible on the outside, so something to do with the Time Lords? Is the Doctor's promise to a Time Lord?) In a related note (maybe) the Doctor is seen talking to pictures of River and Susan (Was she lost in the Time War? Would she appear at a later point in the series)

The Doctor seems to be restless in his position, seeming to stay in the one place out of obligation. He is quite eager to leap into the adventure when the liquid spaceship Heather is chasing Bill. (I'm not sure what to make of the Bill/Heather relationship, or the progress it had made before Heather is possessed.) The handling of the situation when the Doctor wanted to wipe Bill's memory is better than when it was Clara on the end of it. (and definitely when it was Donna!) The Doctor's change of mind was quite quick.

Unless it is a future Doctor, which would be interesting in of itself. (Would present!Doctor investigate Bill's vanishing?) The Dalek cameo was handled quite well. The fate of Heather is interesting, and Bill's reaction to it is well handled. I recommend seeing this episode. 9/10.
