The Phantom Menace 3D Release

I'll be going to see it, for sure.

Despite a few scenes, like Jar Jar stepping in poo and getting his face in the connector beam (why was he working on the pod, anyway? Is he a mechanic?), I think the movie is great.

There were terrible performances in the OT, bad dialogue in the OT, and it was made for kids just as much as the PT. I fell in love with Star Wars when I was a kid, and I still view it and enjoy it as one.

He was trying to Sabotage it. He is a Sith Lord as proven by him suggesting to give military powers to Palpatine.

True but the sequel Trilogy was entertaining and not shot on green screen and the character's were far more interesting. The dialogue is far worse in the prequels IMO.

I dispute Darth Maul's status as an "iconic" villain... I consider him the biggest disappointment in the movie. He looked cool but we learned NOTHING about him in any way and thus how could we care what happened to him? The only way you even knew he was a bad guy was that he had a red lightsaber.

It was such big mistake to kill Darth Maul off in the first film. Maul should have been the big badass villain throughout all three films. He should have been the reason why Anakin turns to the dark side: he's so strong that you can only beat him when you give yourself up and use the dark side of the Force. And then there's no way back.

I'm guessing everyone in this thread has seen it in theaters before right? What's the biggest appeal for seeing it again? What percentage of it being 3d comes into that?
I had thought to see it too actually based mostly on the 3D. I don't like 3D but I am curious to see a big sci-fi movie in 3D, however this is post conversion I don't know how good it could be. I watched TPM last week and I don't think I can pay to put myself through that again.

The biggest appeal for me seeing it again, is that i will get to take my 9 year old nephew to see it. He loves 3D, and he grew up on the prequels. Anakin is his hero, he loves the clone wars animated series. So i will have a thrill for him to be able to see these movies on the big screen for his first time.

But hasn't history proven that movies which receive post production 3D are absolutely a gimmick because it doesn't actually offer any "new" experiences for the viewers?

We didn't really learn anything in the original film about Darth Vader but he stillmade it into a big iconic villian. Maul did just fine in his appearance and served his purpose.

True, there was definitely more "presence" in the OT, mainly due to practical effects, more likeable performances/characters, and arguably better screenplays.

I will never argue the PT is better than the OT...not by a long shot.

However, I also don't think the PT is the travesty it's made out to be, and is not this untraversable canyon of difference in quality compared to the OT.

The PT is good, and fun, and I like it. :)

Vader's interactions with Tarkin alone in the first movie gave him more depth than Maul... I agree w/JR - maybe if he'd been around for all three he'd be iconic and have a shot at approaching Vader..

This.

We learned plenty.

KENOBI: A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi knights. He betrayed and murdered your father.
VADER: He is here.
TARKIN: Obi-Wan Kenobi? What makes you think so?
VADER: A tremor in the Force. The last time I felt it was in the presence of my old master.
TARKIN: Surely he must be dead by now.
VADER: Don't underestimate the Force.
TARKIN: The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion.

Well, nobody would really care about Darth Vader had he not reappeared in Empire Strikes Back because they killed him off in the first one.

I don't agree with that - look at Tarkin.

Thing with those two they have so much dialogue, poor old Maul has next to none. No witty remarks tormenting Obiwan.

I'd like to see the Excel sheet on that one.

Here's an article from almost 2 years ago. The main question is how does converting the SW movies to 3D help tell a better story and add to the audience's experience?

I should clarify that I am not a big fan of 3D and much less so of movies that are converted into 3D rather than shot in 3D.

3D should be a mean to the end rather than just the end in and of itself. 3D, like color, is something that could add nuances to movies and help the film makers tell the story better. 3D is not supposed to be something you should slap on any movie and just rake in the cash.

Facts about Vader (1977. edition):

1. He is evil and ruthless.

2. He works for the Empire, but his position in the imperial hierarchy isn't specified, although only one man (Tarkin) appears to outrank him on the Death Star.

3. He used to be flesh and blood, a Jedi, who at some point became a cyborg (More machine than a man). How, when and why? Wasn't specified.

4. He was Kenobi's pupil, a good friend, and an excellent pilot

7. A traitor and mass murderer of his own Jedi brethren.

It takes about 15 seconds to read this list, so how exactly does this qualify as "plenty"?

See, the brilliance of the original films is that the characters and the universe itself feel real, in the sense that thedialogue, the acting and production design itself suggest a much larger universe that isn't shown explicity on screen.. but the images, dialogue and performances all plant very effective seeds in the minds of the audience. There is plenty in what you listed to allow the viewer to really have ideas of who this character (Vader) is without dispelling the mystery of the character that makes it so intriguing
